Whats a good 7in fixed blade knife

You could also get an RD7 for yourself and the slightly smaller RD6 for your son. They'd look identical, but the shorter blade might be a little easier for him to handle. (I guess I'm presuming he's smaller, which might not be the case. You'd save $10 too).

The Ranger blades are a good value and tough as nails. You might check out the Fehrman knives as well.

I would also strongly suggest the Ranger RD 7!!! Justin is awesome, and you get a FANTASTIC knife at a great price!! And a killer warrantee to boot.

Get two Ranger RD-7s. They're bullet proof, and Justin will customize them a bit if you want things a little different. At $100 base price, that's the best, toughest deal going. http://www.rangerknives.com/Knives/index.html

Warranty: "Are guaranteed to be free from defects in materials and workmanship for life. No questions asked. If it fails for any reason send it back and it will be fixed or replaced at no cost to you."

You won't get a warranty with the Becker. Camillus is kaput.

Others have mentioned the Ontario Rat-7. That might be a good blade, and it comes in under $100. I've given them a look at Chestnut Ridge Knives. But I just don't know as much about them.

Exactly what he said!!!

Peace.

why is 1025 rated for longer blades compared to things like D2? is carbon a harder material, therefore better suited for longer knives?

what is that black powder coat look called on that above knife? it looks awesome!

It's actually called a "powder coat", seriously.

The choice comes down to toughness. D2 is a stronger and generally harder steel than 1095, so it holds an edge better/stays sharp longer... The problem is that D2 is more brittle and easier to chip than 1095, that said D2 is not a brittle steel by any means and is a great choice for a knife blade.

I like 1095 in longer blades since I tend to abuse my longer blades more than shorter ones, chop/scrape/hack/pry etc are fine uses for a knife that can take abuse. For a cutter/slicer, generally a smaller blade, D2 is my choice. My RAT-7 is D2 and I have an Ontario survivial machette (1095) for an abuse blade.

In a nutshell if you are going to beat on a blade go with 1095, tougher and easier to put an edge back on it after hacking through roofing shingles or the like. For a cutting/slicing knife go with D2, keeps its edge longer but more difficiult to sharpen in the field.

I would go for the Ranger (actually, I DID).

Whatever you choose, if it's for a camp knife I recommend you go with some carbon steel rather than D2.

Why? That advice is buying into hype, seems like. 1095 may be easier to sharpen, but that just means it's less wear-resistant than D2, and will dull more quickly.

I've used my RAT-7 D2 VERY heavily for chopping all sorts of wood, both green and dry, as well as kitchen chores, etc. Works perfectly -- still shaving sharp after chopping through a 2.5" mostly dried out log, twice.

D2 isn't hard to sharpen -- I use a diamond hone for really dull blades, then a Sharpmaker to for the rest of it. Works great.

all good choices but if you want no hassles, fast service, a heck of a bargain, and a great guy to work with call Justin at Ranger Knives! I have the RD7 and it is wonderful, you won't be sorry...

I like David's work too, but I sort of doubt it fits in the price range suggested.

You can also share your experience (and pictures of course :D) @ Ranger knives forum @ knifeforums.com

I wish I could buy something more pricey but what ever one I chose to pick up I have to buy 2, my son is 14yrs. old and pretty much gets 1 of every thing I get so if I buy a knife at the $125 mark I'm really spending $250, I spoil him but its just me and him so some one has to.

Good for you! You have a lucky son -- his dad cares enough to share with him. And you're a lucky dad -- you have a son who wants to do the things you do.

My sons are 6 and 2, and they're VERY interested in daddy's knives. They both know not to touch them, but I'm looking forward to the time when we can go out and do some brushwhacking together.

As far as knives go -- I have a RAT-7 D2 that I bought for $100 with shipping. It's been a very good, very tough knife, and I highly recommend it both for toughness and useability. It fits my hand well, and works for all sorts of chores. Be aware that you'll probably have to do some work to thin and even out the edge, or edges, if you get two. This takes awhile, but the result is worth it.

If I didn't have a couple of Becker BK7's, which are no longer being made, I'd be buying the Ranger RD7.

Terrific choice!
