Whats A Good Begginer Knife??

If you are 13, my advice would be to stay away from martial arts knives like the balisong until you are 18.
It might even be illegal for you to have one! Besides, there aren't any good ones that are cheap.

But if your parents agree to let you have a knife, ask them to check out the Swedish Mora knives available from Ragweed Forge (www.ragweedforge.com). They are very cheap but very good knives. Several are designed for the Swedish Boy Scouts. They would be excellent to use on camping trips and other outdoor activities for guys your age. Just be sure to ask your parents to order one that has a finger guard. Some don't have them and you could cut yourself.

I agree with the other guys. We were all 13 once too and believe us when we say you don't want to be caught out with a balisong at age 13, 14, or whatever.

I would get yourself a nice quality knife for about $50.

You can get yourself a Spyderco Delica or a Benchmade Mini-Griptilian (what I'm carrying right now). Both knives have 3" blades and are nice knives.

I would even suggest a Spyderco Dragonfly or a Benchmade Benchmite. Both are around $30 and have like 2.5" blades and are great little knives.

Just because a knife is small don't think that it can't get the job done. I think sometimes people get large knives just to get a large knife.

I also agree with W.T. Beck about your parents. Make sure they know about the knife and let them know you'll use it as a tool. I think you need to get to know a knife first before you train with it for a defensive tool.

Welcome to the forum by the way. It's a great place and you'll find that a lot of us would never use a knife for self defense. We use them for tools, to cut things. If I need something for self defense I'll use my fist or a gun. Knives can do a lot more damage than most people realize.

Be careful and stay safe whatever you do!

I would think your sensai would want you to train with a particular size and blade style ?
Ask for his opinion and let him look at the models you're considering before you buy it.

I think everyone here is being a little "belittling" to Paintball here. You are all talking to him as if he were still six, not thirteen. I think if he wants to own a knife so he can train with it in a martial art under a teacher, thats ok. I remember when I was thirteen, I already had quite a sizeable knife collection, and I was very responsible with them. Of course, this depends on where you live (I was in Germany at the time). In North America, owning a balisong is illegal almost everywhere. I agree that with 13, being caught on the street with any kind of knife is annoying, and could get you into trouble. Anyhow, if balisongs are legal where you live, you might want to look into the benchmade series, theire quite good.

If the knife is just for martial arts training then go ahead and get a balisong but if you plan to carry the knife at all I would take every one else suggestion and get a 3" or less knife. A good lock and non tactical look would be a plus. Spyderco Benchmade and SAK would be my top three. I don't think anyone is being overly "belittling". He is growing up in a very different world than most of us did thanks to the PC crowd and zero tolerance. I carried a knife everyday in junior and high school and never had a problem with it. I even used it in front of teachers and lent it to them in a couple cases. Try that today and you will be on the six o'clock new as the unnamed youth who is being expelled for bringing a weapon to school. It is just too easy today for a good kid to make a dumb mistake with a knife and get in a heap of trouble. Nobody wants to see that happen.
