Does anyone know of a good fixed blade knife that has long fighting characteristics and has decent steel and is under 45$

NEEDS: (in order of importance)
1. Good steal
2. Under or near 45$
3. Long blade

Well, I think the Smith & Wesson Homeland Security tanto is a pretty good knife. You can get it at Smoky Mountain Knife Works for $40. Even comes with a sharpener.

Nothing wrong with a Buck 119. I have two fixed blades and they are both Kabars. A 5.25 inch 1258 and a 7 inch 1211. The 5.25 inch blades, shorty heavy bowie, and large heavy bowie are in your price range.

Cold steel has several knives that are under $40.Like their 4116 Krupp Stainless steel knives and 1055 carbon steel machetes and knives.

What does 'long fighting characteristic' mean? If you want a more 'tacti-cool' fixed blade, perhaps the Buck 119 Special is not what you want, it's more 'general purpose'. The Buck Short/serrated Nightguard #655 is ~$40 at Wally World. The longer plain blade version, the 650 Nightguard, is around $45-$50 mail order these days. I recently bought one - it's a nice, well-made, and strong knife - with a decent sheath. Of course, a standard KaBar USMC Fighting Knife, or an Army or Navy version, seems to run around $50 up these days as well. Just some thoughts.

If, caught out in the woods/boonies, and needing a knife, that Buck 119 would be, indeed, 'Special' - and, at ~$35 at Wally World, a great buy.

those are nice suggestions. the buck 119 is nice but i wanna see what other options there are. i dont want a machete.
i dont like the ka bar because of the completely circular handle.

Hmm wouldn't bother with the buck 119 its not what youre looking for.
the SW is in the right direction, so heres what i suggest:

Ka-Bar USMC Fighting/Utility Knife

Ontario SPEC PLUS SP-10 Marine Raider Bowie (10 inch blade but its 49 bucks)

GLOCK Field Knife (FM-78 or FM-81 <== saw spine)Both are weighted for throwing.

Ontario SP6 Fighting Knife http://store.defense-tek.com/ok8325.html

Coldsteel OSS 48 bux but its double edged and has a subhilt http://store.defense-tek.com/39lssc.html

The S&W Homeland Security is a far better knife than most people think. It's advertised with a 440C blade and I've found mine to be rugged and it holds an edge very well. It's also exceptionally strong. It's good for all around cutting jobs, can chop if you need to chop, can baton if you need to baton. The blade is very easy to sharpen, but the knife itself is a bit heavy. If you need a lighter hunting knife, there are a number you can choose from.

Buck 119.
For $45 you can buy four Moras.
Brusletto Bruslettokniven.
Helle Fjellkniven.
Helle Tollekniv.
