What's a good knife for a camping trip?

I would also recomend a Mora and a Fiskars hatchet but...if you want a Kabar go for it. I personally have one and all though it's now a beater (meaning I've upgraded to Swamp Rat), it's not a bad knife. I would however recomend the 5" version just because they seem like they would be a lot more handy for what you're looking for. And, I think on their website they have a story of their name sake where an old mountain man wrote them a letter of how he used his knife to kill a bear but it was so intelligable that it read Ka Bar. But get a gun for bears man I'm not recomending a knife! :D

Good choice. That'll get the job done while you are shopping & saving for your first custom :D

I'll also recommend a Mora knife as a great low-cost knife. If you didn't know, a great source of Moras is http://www.ragweedforge.com . Scroll down to the Mora Knives link.

I myself like the #746 and #748 (or #711 and #731 for the carbon steel counterparts). Great handles!!

If this is your first time camping don't forget to invest in decent equipment in addition to a good knife. Spend the money on a good tent, sleeping bag, and sleeping pad. Beyond that camping can be done pretty inexpensively. You can cook over a fire or use foil, use a cheap pot, you can start fires with inexpensive matches (though I'd encourage you to try using a sparker w/ vaseline-soaked cotton balls), and you can keep dry with cheap plastic ponchos or an umbrella.

Leave your plans with someone you trust - let them know when you expect to be back and tell them to call for help if you don't return on time.

As this is a survival forum, bring along at least basic survival gear - see http://www.equipped.org for more details on that. Even just a knife, a whistle, a flashlight, fire-starting gear, and a few large trash bags can save your life.

Another one for the friskar hatchet, 780 mora and leatherman wave. It's light and it will cover all you ever need.

Ill cast another for the Mora and the fiscars hatchet.

I carry a Spyderco Endura, it can be had for under 50$ and is conveinent to carry almost anywhere, Delicas are also a good option and a little less expensive.

Multi Tools are almost a Must. Screw drivers, pliers, and other tools will save your knife from abuse.

Pepper spray is a good option if you really think defense is an issue, a stout walking stick would also be handy in this area, if thats not enough, check out the Cold Steel bushman, its designed to be used as a spear point.

Fiskars hatchet and an SAK and youll be set with the only tools youll ever need for around $50 total

Bark river Nebula and a Saw (folding), $160 total, and solid..a Mora will do the trick as well, I just like high dollar knives, My Mora 2K just deboned a potroast in no time, and was still shaving sharp, I have carved wood with it alot, and it carves fuzz sticks better than any knife I own. I just like a stout knife, incase a big project rears its ugly head.

Lots of good advice here. I like the cold steel master hunter/Benchmade fixed grip 151/ BK10. Mora's can't be beat for the money. I find a knife with a blade 4 to 5 & 1/2 inches & 1/8 to 3/16 inches thick the most useful.
