Camel spiders ain't too big a deal. Mean and aggressive, but relatively harmless (no venom). The scorpions are a problem as they like to come out at night and climb into hidey holes when daylight comes. I shake out my boots every morning. Their sting is quite lethal.
I have to agree about the fixed blades being somewhat superfluous. I only carry mine about 20% of the time, otherwise they are in my BOB or my hooch. A good quality tactical folder like the ones so far mentioned is really ideal here, and since your buddy already has a multi-tool, that pretty much narrows it down to just a folder. On that note, any decent one you get him will be much appreciated and certainly useful. I would still recommend not going to spendy. There is a good chance it will get lost, stolen or broken, and anything much more than $50 is probably overkill.
