Hey all, i need your suggestions. I'm a frequent mountain biker that goes on fireroads, single track etc. I need specifically a knife that can be strapped on my camel pacs shoulder strap. I'm sure you know what i'm referring too, a knife that can be holstered up to my shoulder, just like a back pac shoulder loop. I really thought about it and,in a event where i needed my knife, even if i had a knife or a firearm it would be useless even if it's in my back pac. So i need a knife that can be strapped on my camel pacs shoulder straps similar to those used by the military etc. lastly, a knife that is not too big 4-6 fixed blade?

Mountain biking with a long, razor sharp, piece of steel lashed to your chest?

Nothing wrong with having a knife strapped to your person or gear. Soldiers, divers, firefighters, parachutists, climbers, etc, do it all the time.

Sure they do, but a downhill, scorpion-style faceplant over the handlebars could be your last with a six inch fixed blade under your chin.

But, whatever, just make sure you don't go cheap on the sheath.

Fallkniven WM1. Light and sturdy. Smaller than you search for but as its widely used in at least Sweden of sportsmen type adventurers its a proven design for the area of use. FRN sheath can be good as the blade should be kept protekted until its you and not an accident that blanks the blade.

I have a CamelBak MULE and I keep my RC-4 attached to the strap with a Tek-Lok. I am sure a MOLLE set-up woudl work better, but I use what I have at the moment. Don't see any problem with it as long as the sheath is damn secure...

That is a great point -especially if the user is considering up side down vertical carry.

I would strap to the side of the pack, or even the back.

Or maybe rig a set up to strap the knife to your bike -like the water bottle holders.

For what purpose? Are you cycling in bear country or what?

I used to cycle a lot and found a Leatherman multi-tool ideal for my purposes but I appreciate your perceived needs might be rather different. You implied that a firearm was a consideration so if you're in a situation that would benefit from carrying a firearm, carry a firearm.

Yes he is in bear country. The OP is from LA, which once you get outside the city, actually has a pretty high concentration of black bears. But while in bear country and cougar country the OP should really be carrying Bear Spray as a deterrent not a knife, which I have seen in a compact size for runners. I can really understand the concern for having a knife handy while mountain biking, especially in remote areas, I carry a folder in my pocket, Benchmade Griptilian, and a fixed blade along with a few survival type supplies in my camel back.

LOL!
That's exactly what I was thinking!

Might I suggest a Fallkniven WM1.

Also, an M-60 machine gun mounted on your handlbars would be helpfull if you are worried about bears. Get a real mount for this, duct tape won't work well at all.

I have come across bears several times while Mtn biking.
Fortunately, none were Mama's with cubs.
Most just eyed me and wandered off the trail.
One bear, that I totally surprised at a blind corner, actually screamed*, yes screamed, and bolted off the trail. Not sure who screamed louder, me or him.

I have been chased by moose several times. They are far scarier than bears. The only time I couldn't avoid/ outrun them, I used pepper spray.
Worked like a charm.:)

Knives are next to useless against lions, tigers, bears and moose though.

*OK, they call it 'Bawling', but when they get real excited, it gets real high pitched and sounds like a scream.

I'll never forget that sound.
Make it go away, make it go away.... think happy thoughts, think happy thoughts.......

Get a RAT Cutlery knife with the MOLLE backing for it. It has a jump-tested sheath with a retention strap AND a little elastic pocket that you can pull over the end of the handle, making it impossible for the knife to come loose.

Here I am with mine rigged up on my Maxpedition Malaga bag.

You might want to consider a folder. I carry either a Spyderco Delica or Endura when mtn biking clipped inside waistband. I haven't found it to be uncomfortable and it is within easy reach if needed.

+1 on any of the RAT Cutlery line (4" and under)......Izula, HEST, or RC-4.......pick the length you prefer. Cannot beat them for the money....they are tanks.

The Rat's always seemed big for me to mount on the shoulder strap, especially on my camelbak. I ended up using a benchmade nimravus. It fits neatly in the width of the strap, and it's comparitively light.

Glock, you have California laws to worry about which may limit your choices. That would be the first thing to check into.

You might look into the AG Russell Deerhunter. It comes in a kratex sheath with positive retention which should address the safety issues. There are also two smaller versions, the Trout and Bird, and the Hunter's Scapel if your laws require such.

The Russell Deer Hunter’s sheath has a button running parallel to the blade. Push down on it, (towards the knife’s tip) and that releases the knife. If the OP does take a facer over his handlebars, there’s no telling but that the button might be pressed in the crash. Thus adding a free flying knife to his troubles.

An inexpensive option would be the BUCK Gen5. This has a cordura sheath lined with plastic/kydex like material which can be worn horizontal or vertical on the belt but straps onto pack straps in a practical fashion.

The Zero Tolerance ZT0150 is what I'd get if I want to strap a knife to the shoulder strap of my pack. Been eying this one for months. Just for that reason. Could be illegal though so check your laws.

From what I understand, as long as you have a need for a sheath knife in LA county it is okay. They wont let you EDC one for no direct purpose. As long as you are going to, doing, or coming back from an outdoor woodland activity you can cary whatever you think is reasonable. Still, I would read up on it again if it were me.

The same law applies to folders with blades over three inches.
