Been thinking about buying a filtration mask, wanted some expert advice on a good/safe mask that I can wear with confidence during stock removal knowing my lungs are safe. Thanks in advance.

I'm a welder really like the 6000 series from 3M with the replaceable flat pink colored filters, which I believe are called 2097. You can pick them up at any welding store and they are meant for filtering out metal dust particles and welding fumes and I know first hand they work great because I don't smell smoke whatsoever while welding with them on!

Check out Nick Wheeler's video below on the forums he is using the exact set up I described above.

Excellent... just the type of info I was looking for. Will be taking a hard look at this. Much Appreciated!

You might wanna consider the Resp-o-rater. Surprisingly comfortable and cool. Hepa filters too btw. Beard friendly too. No fogging safety glasses. The intake is behind your neck. The only downside I've encountered is that you're breathing through your mouth and you WILL drool some. I deal with it..................

Absolute protection (even from toxic woods) would be a respirator using FFP3 filtration - NIOSH equivalent would be P99 -P100 (depending on whether full face or half face) The NIOSH system just looks at the filtration characteristics of the filters themselves, the EU ratings also add a variable for the likelihood of getting a good face fit. It's extrememly important that face fit is taken into account with passive respirators because there's no point in filtering down to 2 microns if you have a 20 though gap under the chin. It's also better to use a twin filter mask if doing a lot of hand work, as the twin filters usually restrict breathing less. Best of all is a powered respirator, because they don't need good face fit (due to +ve air pressure) and they keep you cool in the summer, no more fogged glasses/goggles either.

See the safety section of this, there are many options.

P100 is the filter type for dust

Acid Gas -P100 combo cartridges are what you want for fume protection with the phenolic handle material

I got excitable as to safety on two counts: after grinding brass, bled from the nose for several days - bad cough for weeks; on another occasion had a piece of grinder grit take an odd bounce and get inside my safety glasses & into my right eye socket behind my eyeball.

I have glasses and a beard so that complicates things too.

I've settled into this positive pressure face shield: http://www.woodcraft.com/product/2004923/37354/trend-airshield-plus-extra-battery.aspx

but I notice they have an updated version that folks like a lot better: http://www.woodcraft.com/product/2082880/33278/trend-airshield-pro-with-ear-defenders.aspx

... and last word of advice: if you go with a face shield like these - try before you buy - different shields are designed for different skull/face shapes.

That's my 2 cents!

To all... excellent feedback and advice, thank you. I especially enjoyed the link from 1234567910.

I ended up buying a NORTH 7700 half mask and 7580P100 filters. Thanks to all for helping/sharing :)
