whats a good style/brand hawk for a beginning thrower? i want quality, not a piece that will chip first time i throw it. i found a place that looks like they sell quality stuff, fort turner, anyone heard of them? what style? pioneer? norse? i need help.

Cold Steels line of hawks like the Trail and Riflemans Hawk work well, and won't break the bank.

But they will break handles, so if you want something that you will not have to keep fixing and replacing I would suggest a solid hunk of steel like Condors spiked hawk thrower....

...works well for me.

You can throw about any hawk but all the SCA etc competition throwers use single blade hawks with no poll. Like wrap and weld hawks. They tend to be better balanced for throwing. Weight and balance all forward. Plenty of makers make a hawk like this. This is just an example. This one isnt really desighned for throwing. The throwers will usually have a more upswept blade so they stick better.Throw whatever feels good to you

I bought a Buck Hawk from Fort Turner this summer when I was teaching myself to throw, and it's great. Excellent craftsmanship, and a very good price. I would highly recommend it.

I have a Fort Turner Iroquois and is my best/favorite thrower. Highly recommended.

Another vote for Cold Steel hawks. For throwing the Norse Hawk should be very good.
