I have this model and it's a tank. When talking to the guy at the Verizon store, he told me that when they first came out, they used to keep one in a glass of water to show to people. They also would just toss it on the ground in front of the counter and then pick it up and make a call. No problems.

Another story I heard was of someone dropping it from the 5th floor of a construction site. When he went down to retrieve what he figured would be a mangled piece of plastic, he was able to pop the battery back in and it fired up with no problems.

I had the first G'zone, it was a great phone. It truely is indestrutable. I recently upgraded to the new model because it is less bulky and fits in your pocket better. Also the new one has a digital compass thing that is pretty cool. Also the ringer is louder, which was my only complaint with the first one. It comes with two batteries too, one of them is a longer life battery...All in all its a great phone, I can't say enough.

Another vote for the Gzone, I love mine.. There are youtube vids of them being set on fire and doused in beer, run over with cars, frozen in blocks of ice etc.. The LED flashlight and compass are very cool touches.. Also comes with an extra capacity battery in addition to the slimline one..

I've not tried this model yet but have read online, for what that's worth, that call quality suffers. Can those of you that have it tell a big difference?

Nope, I haven't had any more problems with the call quality of this phone than I did with others. The craddle charger it comes with is excellent too.

Not trying to hijack the thread but is there a texting phone that approaches the G'zOne Boulder in toughness. I text a lot and that's what keeps me from buying phones like this because they're a pain to text on. I've gotten really used to the full keyboard. I have an EnV2 and love it. But it is a delicate little thing. I understand that it's not gonna be as tough as an armored flip phone. But I was just wondering what's the most durable phone with a full keyboard.

I have the i560 Motorola
http://www.motorola.com/Consumers/US-EN/Consumer-Product-and-Services/Mobile-Phones/i560-US-EN
It's mil spec

I got a "padded" (it looks like wet suit material) Body Glove case
I drop it all the time and nothing happens:thumbup:

I got Nextel because I like the walky talky feature....

Well, the original "V" model was a beast. :D

Probably not going to come close to the G'zOne for any full keyboard phone. Maybe a Blackberry with a case?

I love having a full keyboard, but I've been leaning towards getting a really simple phone sometime. G'zOne looks like the ticket. :)

Yeah, I just can't go back. I text way too much to go back to triple tapping the keys.

+1 for the G'Zone Boulder. Make sure you get the never version with the front and rear speakers. It is much better than the original Boulder which got all of the crappy reviews at first. I've had one for about 6 months and love it. No problem with sound quality at all. Loudest speaker phone I've ever had.

The Boulder will probably be my next phone.

But I just reactivated my old LG VX8100 because I broke my new phone (I dropped it) and I'm much happier with the old 8100. It's been through hell and works just fine, I did order a new battery for it though.

It may not be mil-spec, but it's a big tough overbuilt phone that I've thrown around, dropped off the back porch (12 feet to the ground), it's hit pavement... it won't die.

my buddy went through 6 cells in two months, then got the milspec motorola, hasn't had a problem since. and as a mechanic it gets s..t kicked.

Can one get G zone and use it with AT&T?

Sorry but no. Verizon phones are CDMA; AT&T's are GSM. They're completely incompatible.

yeah is this phone available as open line units, not locked to a specific cellular provider?

Unlocked units are all GSM phones. On Craigslist I keep seeing CDMA phones being sold as "unlocked" to work on other CDMA networks (MetroPCS, Sprint), but can't be transferred to a network they aren't already built to use.

EDIT: On 2nd reading Juramentado's question is for outside the US. I don't know where (or if) the G'Zone can be had if not in the US.

We're coming up on our renewal also. The 2 mil-spec phones on AT&T's site are the Samsung Rugby (a837) and the Motorola Tundra. Opinions?

I also like full keyboards but I may be able to go back to regular keys. Although I won't like it ;)!
