What's a good "western" type folding knife.

Just finished watching a western movie and now have the need to buy a "western" type folding knife. Of course this probably means a slipjoint with a natural material for the scales.

Any suggestions? Price range around 40 bucks.

for a few bucks more I would get a Great Eastern Cutlery Harness Jack. Can't get more cowboy than that.

I agree with the Case idea. Can't get much more coyboy-ish than a "stockman."

For pocket carry I prefer the Medium Stockman with the rounded bolsters. But a real 'coyboy' might prefer the Large Stockman, and I think the squared bolsters look more Western.

The Jackknife, Folding Hunter, and Barlow would also be good choices. Keep in mind the sort of tasks that a 'cowboy' or rancher might use a pocketknife for - cutting twine probably the most common knife task on a farm or ranch, but also hunting, picking splinters, cleaning fingernails, peeling apples - basic things like that.

Do you know any old ranchers? You could ask them what kind of knife they carry. I worked a short time for a local rancher here in New Mexico - he had a pocketknife, but heck if I know what kind. It was old, worn, and looked very inexpensive.

My grandfather owned a farm with cows, not out west but in Illinois. He did love western books and cowboy movies though. This was his knife - too bad you can't buy anything like it today:

Peter Parker,
Who made those knives, in particular the bottom two? I can't quite make out the tang stamps. Are they current production? Would they happen to be carbon steel?

I love equal-end knives and there aren't many available that I know of, and almost none have traditional carbon steel blades. :(

I bought this as a Christmas present to myself.

It's a Case Jumbo Stockman , 6.5 Bonestag & stainless steel blades. It's a little more than your $40 limit.

But the large & medium stockman in amber bone is closer to your $40 price.

The amber bone Queen Cattle King in D2 steel (top) is about $60, the Bulldog Stockman ( bottom ) are German made and can be found for $35 - $45, the one in the picture is a 2004 model in celluloid and carbon steel.

Stockman's are classics as are trapper patterns, sowbellys, Texas jacks and many others. In the price range you are looking at you can go with either stainless steel or carbon steel (my preference). Brands include Case, Queen, Cinch, GEC and many others. A true classic would be a Marble but a USA made one would best be bought by watching ebay auctions.

You might just watch the traditional forum for a while, see what is talked about there.

Oh shucks, you might as well listen to one more vote for a bone handled Case Stockman.

The old Case yellow handled (CV) Sodbuster is a very common knife among ranch hands here in Texas. Cheap, solid working knives that are big enough to handle ranch work - small enough to carry comfortably in a pants pocket.

Why not one more vote for stockman. And of course I would say Case. But others are nice too.

I have a large stockman like this coming soon. 4 1/4"

A little smaller at 3 5/8"

There are many more. I would go to my stomping grounds, the tradition section of this fine forum. Lots of slipjoint talk over there.

I own a 'Granpa' knife, Case XX Big Coke Bottle design, and there's a china-made Marbles in that design for 18.99$.. hate to say something nice about china made, but the knife isn't a bad deal, even if you paid 40$ for it.. and the vintage case xx is 3x that much, but rarity counts.. it's not 3x as good a value, even if you find one in perfect shape..

I've got a 4 blade congress that's fersure a c'boy knife, a whittler, castrator, leather 'n string cutter.. made for that set of tasks.. and IT is a china made marbles.. wasn't for the fact they use stainless steel I'd own a dozen of 'em..

a good few of those 'marbles' are in fact classic Case designs, to the hundreth of an inch.. it's hard to go wrong on the designs, and you won't find cheaper labor.. at a 40$ price point what's not to like?

this is a different handle material than mine, $27..I know nothing of the vendor, for an example only.. but don't rule 'em out if you've not fondled 'em, better than you'ld expect.

Case came about in the early 1900s - not sure about their Stockman models. I'd suggest a Buck #301 Stockman, Made in ID, MSRP $48. Great user knife. Of course, my favorite, heralding from the 1960s, is the Buck 110 Folding Hunter. It just looks like a good worker knife. Of course, it is a great 'worker' knife. Too big? Get a 112 Ranger. The best news re the 110 is that it is $25 at Wally World.
