What's a good wilderness knife combo?

So far I am looking at the RC-6 and the RC-3

Sounds like a good combo.

Also - buy a SAK! Victorinox makes some good useful SAKs that have handy tools (bottle opener, file, blade, saw, etc).

With an RC-6, RC-3 & SAK then you would be pretty well covered to start with. Then you could look at other stuff later if you decided you needed it (machete, axe, Junglas, Izula, Mora, etc). But at the moment you need to start somewhere and it is hard to imagine regretting buying an RC-6 & an RC-3.

i take my rc4 and a leatherman wave, seems to get everything i need to do done.

rc4 can take a beating if need be and the leathermans gizmos come in very handy

I like the 6 and 3 combo myself.I really dig the 3 as a slicer,1/8" stock.Plus,I always have a Vic SAK on me.I could replace the 6 with my BK2,BK9,or my Gransfors Brucks Wildlife Hatchet.I like a little variety once in awhile.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will also be pocketing a Victorinox one handed trecker.(forgot to mention that earlier) And now I am seriously thinking about adding a machete to the mix.(Looks like this might be a four knife setup afterall) WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF A MACHETE? Why would I need one if I am already using a RC-6 or RC-5?

Reach is the advantage for me ,instead of my face being brushed with bush or tree limbs using the 5 or 6 I can use the machete at a safer distance

I cashed in all my coins at coinstar, and sold all my beer bottles, water bottles, and juice bottles ;) I wasn't kidding when I mentioned before that I was saving where I could to get my Junglas :D

Ordered 2 junglas, a sheath for homeless 5, another 5 with sheath, and a few other items ;) had more saved up than I realized :D Hahaha, Going Green = Saving Green :)

For most work you probably wouldn't need anything more than what you already have. Machetes, to me, are more efficent at doing work. I can cut through something faster with a machete, with less energy expended, than I can with a 5 or 6. In fact, the only down side I see to a machete is the overall size makes it difficult to carry for some. Also, the thin nature may cause the edge to chip out on harder wood. Machetes are just a down and dirty tool for me.

The machete is all you need.

I was a doubter before the last RAT class but now I would NEVER go into the woods without one. You can do everything and do it faster and easier than with a fixed blade knife. The lite machete weighs just 1 oz more than the 5 and you get 18"!

If I could only carry 1 to the woods, it would be a machete. If I got to carry something else, too, I'd make it a HEST or SAK with a saw. If I could carry 3 blades into the woods...well, I never would carry 3 blades.

I'm learning more and more that it ain't the bow, it's the indian.
