Hello,
I have managed to screw up twice in my sales posts in handling the order of sales in the Folding Knives Sales Forum.
In the first go around. I announced a sale to the first person that shot me a Personal Message which upset the guy that claimed the item on the Sales Thread.
In the second even it was the exact opposite where I had a member PM me about wanting a knife but another claimed it on the Sales Thread.
After my first screw up I sold the knife to the gentlemen that posted on the Sales Thread.
In both cases someone was pretty upset because they didn't get the knife that was on sale.
I added a line to the notes that said that the Sales Thread was the place to claim a knife as I wanted to be transparent.
Is this standard practice and should it be handled this way?
What are everyone's opinions?
Thanks!

You did nothing wrong. Until the knife has been paid for, it’s your choice who you want to sell to. Of course, you should follow the rules you set yourself in the sales thread, and don’t sell it twice.

Somebody might claim the knife who you don’t like. Why sell to him/her ? All your choice. People get upset sometimes but that’s on them …

If someone is bullying you, report them.

Roland.

You could always state in your sales thread........

First person posting "I'll take it" here in the thread gets it.

or

First person to PM me with their intention to buy gets it.

You state the terms or communication that work best for you. Personally I think PM's are better but that is just me.

Alternatively you could just state in your sales thread that you retain the right to approve of disapprove of any sale.

While it might be best to check both before awarding the item, you did nothing wrong. You can sell to whomever you choose. Your bigest mistake is likely you are selling cheap, or they wouldn't be reacting so fast, or caring that they missed. It is a nice thing to do to sell cheap, but when they starting fighting rather then appreciating - no sympathy for them

ignore people who get mad cause they missed a good deal. some people just need to grow up and not act like spoiled children. the rest are flippers and all they'll do is resell it for more. so be glad they didnt get it.

others here already gave ya good advice on what to do.

My $0.02:

I don't think you did anything wrong per say in either instance. Its the sellers prerogative to whom they sell (for any or no reason). Yes, people will get annoyed and may use some salty language and whatnot but, ultimately, we're all big boys.

You can put your sale rules into the thread (provided, of course, they don't conflict with forum rules). Something along the lines of "first one to post an I'll take it wins" or whatever you prefer. If someone gets salty, you can just tell them to piss off.

I like the idea of PM then you can communicate with the other party without others seeing information ie email or phone numbers. But as others have stated your sale your rules.

Your sale, your rules. I generally sell to the first person who says they'll take it, whether in the thread or via PM. I can see the time stamps in both locations, so I know who was first. However, I also state in my sales threads once claimed, payment must be made within a specific time period. So, if someone in a DM claims it first, but doesn't pay within the specified time, I'll move on to the next person. You handle your sales how you see fit (within the rules of the forum of course) and don't worry about anyone pouting about it.

One idea would be to lock the thread and require the potential buyer to message you.
This helps to eliminate neredowells that haunt these hallowed sales threads from sending emails to someone who posts in the thread claiming that they are you. I never knew that was a problem until it happened to me, luckily the person knew me well enough to know I wouldn’t email them.
Also now you would be dealing with someone who supports this forum too.

This is the way.
