What's all the fuss about?

I finally broke down and did it. Bought my first expensive production knife.

It's a Strider SnG.

There's something special about the Striders. I can't put my finger right on it, but perhaps it has to do with their famous warranty, come hell or high water, if the knife fails, or breaks, even when due to intentional abuse, they'll fix it or replace it.

This knife feels like a tank. So does my Zero Tolerance 0300. But this one is decidedly lighter. The blade steels are both S30V, and I can get both plenty sharp. This blade was sharpened by moi. Reground the blade to a thinner profile at the edge, using the Worksharp Knife Sharpener, down to the 6000 grit belt. And yes, it's hair popping sharp now.

After lubricating the pivot, it flicks open with alacrity. Closing the sucker is a bit tougher; that titanium framelock definitely sticks against the tang, as it ought to. My thumb needs to do more to unlock it, but for whatever reason, it's a satisfying thing to do it. Probably the feeling that it's ready for some heavy duty stuff.

Enough words. Here are some pics:

Thats a nice looking blade. Where did you buy it from? I am looking in Striders direction.

Thanks!

A friend told me he saw it for sale on another forum, and sent me the fellow's email address. Contacted him and ended up buying it.

The forum is where I am primarily looking. Do you have any reservations using it yet??? I am curious if you are concerned about the first scratch??

I've already used the forum. No reservations, besides the obvious Caveat Emptor (Let the Buyer Beware) warnings.

There are some who will only deal with money orders and cashiers checks and so on. I pass those by. With me, it's Paypal or credit cards, at least if there's a problem I may have some recourse and leverage in getting satisfaction.

As for the scratch... so what? I'm going to be using this knife, and there will be others down the road. If it gets scratched up to the point where I don't like it, well, maybe at that time I'll give it a "hand rubbed" finish. The knife came with little scratches and some wear on the clip. Nothing I wouldn't have ended up doing in short order anyway. Plus those scratches add character. The G10 scale has a polished look at the edges. This knife was probably carried quite a bit. Fine with me. By the way, the blade is smooth opening. I like that. No break in period!

Can you tell I'm happy with my user Strider? :D

Thats what I like. If gonna drop $400.00 on a knife, I plan on keeping it and using it. I am the same way with guns. I hunt with some guns guys wouldn't take out of their gun cabinets.

I have a few knives that I could just keep and not use, however I prefer to use them. Ever notice how a new pair of shoes don't look right? They need to be worn a bit to fit the wearer's foot and then they look good. Same with suits. They need some wear to look right. Same with a knife that's made to be used. It needs to be used to look good. Unless it's a show piece to be admired as a work of art. In that case, treat it like the art that it is.

Striders are meant to be used, really used.

I'm already using mine. In the kitchen, no less. Some might consider that abuse. Not me. When the blade dulls, as it will, I'll simply resharpen it, with a beautiful convex grind. And keep on truckin'...

The thumbstuds are blade stops. Also, be warned that the warranty does NOT cover any intentional abuse or mods. That is a common misconception. In fact, if you even bring up abuse or modding on the Strider forum, and request a warranty fix/replacement, you will get a severe tongue lashing, and be ridiculed by the faithful. They are very adamant about that.

Congrats on getting the SnG. I really like mine. Though nothing's concrete yet, Mick started a thread on the Strider forums yesterday saying he might have to change the warranty. He said there's too many people taking advantage of it. The warranty was one of my reasons for shelling out the dough for mine, so I'm kind of at a loss. I understand why they might change the warranty from their perspective, but it doesn't mean I have to like it.

That is a NICE knife and somewhat rare - The fastener says "Hinderer" on it. As in Rick. The newer striders do not say that making this knife that much more special! Love the tiger stripe and the striderized finish on the other size. AWESOME! People can be haters but there is nothing like owning a Strider! Use that blade in good health! You have a winner there!

Im glad you like your knife. For that money you better love it right! I've owned six SNG's total and I won't be buying any more due to blade slop. But, obviously I can relate to your love for that knife. Looking back, I had two good ones which I should have never sold. The last two I've purchased have sucked. I cant do it anymore. I hope your experience with strider remains a positive one.

The new SnG's have a new type of pivot on them too. Yo FOLDERGUY you got a nice shiv there! Out - Big E -

Nice knife man! I bought my first high end folder this week too. I went with an XM-18 and couldn't be more happy. I've thought about getting a SnG for a long while but can't get past the possible QC issues.

I said this would be my only high-end folder for a long while but my XM makes me want to check out a Strider even more than I did before:eek::D

I've owned/own both.. the big difference is in the weight. The XM is considerably heavier than the strider.. to some people this is good thing, others bad thing. Just thought you may like to hear my experience.

Sweet knife, congrats! Just when I thought I had talked myself out of getting a Strider!

However, after all the QC issues, I know I won't be buying one without handling it first. Glad you got lucky, and good to hear you'll be getting your enjoyment out of it, too.
