What's all the hype about the BK-5?

Let me be completely honest with you all.
When I started my Becker collection the BK-5 was on the absolute bottom of my list.
Why? I thought the shape was ugly and that I would have no use for such a knife.

Then something magical happened.
It started with Clich's fanatical responses regarding the BK-5. I had a hard time believing him.
Others who owned the knife echoed his sentiment.
Clich's snakeskin BK-5 was one of the coolest looking knives on the forum.
Then there seemed to be a few month period where there were tons of BK-5 posts.
The knife started growing on me.
I was able to put one in my hand at a local gun and knife show.
That did it. I was hooked. I just had to get one.
The pure quickness and sliceyness of the BK-5 intrigued me to no end.
It was a longer knife than I thought it would be and felt great in the hand.
I've never called a blade sexy, but the BK-5 is one sexy blade!
The BK-16 was next on the list, but now it must wait.

A few weeks ago I found a used BK-5 on a popular auction site.
It came with a good looking kydex heath as well as the production sheath.
I pulled the trigger and bought it.
I'm so glad I did!
I've been over joyed each time I get a new Becker in the mail.
But this one's different. I just can't put it down!

The previous owner didn't take great care of the blade however.
No biggie. Some quick sanding named that tune.
Put a nice edge on her and WOW! This thing is SHARP!
I've been using it constantly in the kitchen and it will be my go to knife for food prep when camping.

So...If you've been on the fence about the BK-5 like I was, I would recommend this knife to anyone and everyone.
Hands down. This is an awesome knife.
Other forum members weren't B.S.ing about the greatness of the BK-5!
If your considering this knife, just get it. You won't be dissapointed.

Enough rambling. On to the pics. Which just don't do the knife justice.

Thanks to all who helped influence me in buying one of the best knives I've ever owned!!

Nice BK5, I really like mine too.
Al

Gotta love the BK-5 and I have no regrets getting one. This Magnum Camp Knife was the second on my Becker Knives list and was sold even more so when I saw the interview on YouTube with Ethan Becker and Jerry Fisk about this particular knife.

Congrats on your new-to-you 5! it's awesome. and yours looks sweeet.

Well, I read every word and I gotta say I totally agree. I just got mine a week ago and love it. I stripped the coat and have decided to let it patina naturally. I was gonna force one then I thought about cliching it but natural is the way to go.
When you sharpened it did you convex or micro-bevel the edge?
Good Luck!

Clich would be proud :D:D:D I love my 5 although I only use it in the kitchen its still a beast for that.

I decided to let mine patina naturally as well.
I kept the factory edge.
I just hit it on my Nortons med/fine stone and ceramic rods.
It out performs my current set of kitchen knives hands down.
Man I love this knife!

Many refer to the BK9 as the King. Unless another Becker has already been officially anointed the Queen, my BK5 is the Queen to me.

Another one falls to the power of the BK-5. Excellent. That's an good-looking blade you've got there, Jonny. It looks well-used and serviceable, with a very decent sheath.

The Snakeskin 5 approves of this thread.

I always thought the BK5 would make a good combat knife for the apocalypse.

Hey...since you are so in love with the BK5, can I have your BK4 now?

Ooo! I really like the shiny 5 wasatchdan! I guess I should get a 5 pretty soon. I could use a new big kitchen knife... at least that's what I'll tell the better half.

I'd like to get 6 BK15's to drop in the steak knife slots of the block on the counter! :D

Grats on the 5. Great blade. Just somethin about it ! Yes, would be a good combat blade. It's like the old Ronco commercials: it slices, it dices but wait, there's more !!!

My thing is, I don't see a real woods use for this, food prep, yes, bot no wood work to be done with it, but to be completely fair, I haven't held one of these. Can someone comment on its ability to handle wood work?

Yes...it would fair well as a combat knife.

And yes...I am in love with the BK-5.

But no...you cannot have my Muskox. She's a beast who answers to her only master. Nice try Tanner!

I know Clich had a video of him chopping on a tree with one. Looked like it did a fair job.

I dream of the queen.
I love all of Mr.Ethan Becker's creations and own a BK14. My first Becker Blade.
I don't have the 5 yet but the shape of the 5 and the 15 are the most versatile blade shapes I have seen.
The comparative size and strength of the 5 makes it even better. It seems to do practically everything one can REASONABLY ask of a knife.
And the much documented kitchen use makes it justifiable to non-knife people too. (Read: my wife)

I love my 5. Not sure what to do with it either. :-)
If I get a deer this year, it will be on the processing table for sure, along with a selection of other tools.

Food prep in 'camp'? that's pretty large food to pack around.

I'm not a fan of the trailing point while chopping because it feels like it's coming back at me - maybe technique needs improvement.
But man, it's glorious in the hand.

Jerry Fisk + Ethan Becker = WIN.
