What's are your limitations, if any?

I used to be the same way when I started out. Now my ceiling has been raised to around $650. I'm trying to keep it at or below that mark, which is one of the reason's I've adopted this philosophy of if I'm not going to EDC/use it due to it's value or whatever reason, then I won't buy it.

Good luck bro I was there a couple months ago then all of a sudden a bodega showed up at my door lol

I only have one knife. If it gets lost, my limitations revolve around who has it in stock for me to replace it.

I just ask myself if I need it or not.

when I do need one, it needs to be reliable and great performance.

looks arent too important but I always pay extra if the option is there.

most my knives are work related.

I see a lot of "If I'll use it I'll buy it" in here. I threw that out the window a long time ago. I will buy something if I like it, whether I'll use it or not. I may not use it but I will enjoy owning/fondling/looking at it. When that wears off I'll be left with a pristine knife that will bring most of what I paid for it and I will have had the satisfaction of having one.

Exactly this. I buy based on whether or not I like it and whether or not I'm willing to pay what it costs.

I don't use most of the knives I own; I simply enjoy owning what I like and liking what I own.

I really don't care if it is legal or not because I'm not a bad person:) I probably won't spent over $300 on a any time soon because for that much money I would rather buy a gun

Well said and spot-on to my way of thinking as well.

I have knives big & small, I tend to drift towards thinner/lighter EDC ergo'd blades nowadays..

My greatest limitation, freakin coated blades :barf: I absolutely hate them. I'm not a Navy Seal who's worried about the steel reflection from the moon lol, and corrosion is preventable using other methods

Being able to polish/buff out wear on a plain ol' un-coated is always a (+) IMO.

Limitations? Yea limitations are for rational people. Most people on BF including myself shy away from limitations. Myself, I have collecting / buying knives since 1974. I have 71 folders and 24 fixed blades. Limitations have never been a factor in my knife buying decisions. It is been more of a want
factor.

If it doesnt look useful, I wont buy it.
I dont like 8Cr13MOV so I dont but knives with that.
I try to keep it under $200, even when I save money for a knife.
Not much more than 4 inches for EDC.
No crazy-pointy-tips.

1)Money, obviously. I'm not going to buy a knife if I can't afford it.

2)Price. Even if I HAVE the money, I won't pay beyond a certain point. Not to dredge up an old discussion, but there's nothing about a Sebenza, as far as ability and function go, for me to justify paying $400 for it. Yes, I know it's well made with super tolerances, but it's not superior enough to justify the extra cost for me personally. The odds of me needing those extra tolerances over the tolerances of say, a $200 Spyderco or ZT(for example) are about the same as getting hit by lightning every time it storms, so I just can't justify paying that much money, especially when (IMO), the Spyderco or ZT will be a better looking knife as well. And when you start getting into Hinderers and even higher priced stuff, well, it applies even moreso. And as someone else said, if I'm at the point where I'm willing to $400+ to drop on a single item, I'm more likely to get a gun than a folding knife.

3)Aesthetics. If I think the knife is ugly, I won't buy it. This is the main reason I don't own more Spydercos, I know they're great knives and well priced, but so many of them look so similar, and it's a look I'm not extremely fond of to begin with, even if it didn't have the Spydie-hole that I dislike.

4)Quality. This one I'm flexible on. I generally prefer my knives to be decent quality with at least decent materials(8cr13MoV or AUS 8 is fine, 440a I try to avoid), especially if they're a knife I might carry/use. But I will make an occasional exception and get a lesser knife, if it's cheap and has something about it I find appealing . For example, I am fond of the aesthetics of the karambit, so I have a S&W brand one, likewise the S&W "MAGIC" assisted opening system is fun to play with so I have one of those, neither are carried by me though.

For me it depends on:
-Handle size
-Steel (rust resistance, decent edge holding capability)
-Build Quality (I'm looking at you, frost cutlery)
-The role it will play in my set up
