I have been reading here almost everyday, but, not posting much. As everyone knows my wife dies in January and then there was the house fire in April. Haven't had a shop since and been living in a rental.
My house is about rebuilt. Just about completely new now. Only the foundation, the floor, vertical studs and the outside walls are all that remain from the original house. I even had the outside resided. New sheetrock, windows, electrical, appliances, doors, trusses and roof. I will not be moving back in but, selling.
I have bought a place in Lewistown Montana. It has an acre and a 1200 ft insulated shop with room to grow. The house isn't that great and I may replace it with a small modular. I would rather have a small house and a big shop. LOL
Anyway some cut backs are coming at work and i have volunteered to be on the lay off list. I should get the chop next week. I will start hauling my stuff over then. Figure that willl take a couple Uhaul truck loads and maybe a trailer.
I will be hauling some of my stuff over this long weekend, along with my new boat. I picked up a 21' Duckworth aluminum jetboat with a 302 Ford. It isn't far to the Missouri river from Lewistown. From the nearest boat ramp I can go several hundred miles upstream towards Greatfalls or down stream about 40 miles into Fort Peck reservoir which is 150 miles long and surrounded by Charles M Russel reserve. There is only about 12 roads into the perimeter of the lake which is the 5th largest man made lake in the US. Great hunting and fishing that sees little pressure.
I plan to focus on my knife work as well as small welding jobs. I have a portable welding setup and tons (really) of tools. With virtually no debt I should be fine. If I need more I can always get a job running a crew on a new construction project or a maintenance shutdown at a refinery. These jobs typically last a few weeks to a few months and have lots of overtime at excellent wages, plus travel and per diem. There is a real shortage of craftsmen with my skills and experience. I have very good references. So I am not to worried about the money part. I might not be able to live that high on the hog, but, thats not me anyway. Jeans and work shirts, a good shop, a decent 4x4, a boat, hunting and fishing and meat on the BBQ is enough for me. If thing work out with the knives and welding fine. If not I will work 4-6 months a year on short jobs. If all else fails the refinery I work at now has made it clear I will always be welcomed back.
Anyway sometime in August I should be moved and set back up in my new digs. Back to making knives and posting my good and bad advice here. Once that happens if any off you guys find yourself in the middle of Montana with time to kill, let me know. I also hope to meet some Montana blade smiths and learn from them. Jim

Hope the move works well for you, you deserve it. I can not imagine your pain, the new location will help.
All the best,
Jim T

Best of luck with your move Jim! I hope it all work out like you planned.

The best of luck to you on your new adventure. Keep us informed on your move. We want pics.

Best wishes, Jim. And ditto on the pics.

Drive carefully, 3/4 of Canada is down here this weekend , 'nuff said.

Jim, thanks for the update. Sounds as everything is moving along towards your plan. I wish you all the best. Please post some pics once you get your shop all set up. God bless.

Glad to hear your life is moving forward! Sounds like you've kept up your good attitude. I respect your character, sir. My best wishes to you!

Nice to hear from you Jim. I am glad that things are looking up. Congrats on getting the new set up, it sounds like a dream place. You are still in our prayers.

Hi Jim,

We've missed hearing your advise (it's all good :p) around here lately. The couple of times I noticed you poke you head out and add your two cents to a thread, I had to resist derailing the conversation and asking you how things were going. It's good to hear all is progressing. Take it easy on those drives hauling your stuff over.

Thanks for inviting us your way. I sure would love to be able to take you up on that some day. Hanging out in beautiful Montana, making knives with a great guy, learning lots and lots, traipsing around in the woods, boating the rivers and lakes, hunting....

Geesh, it's a good thing I'm broke, or I'd be online right now buying an airline ticket.

All the best, Phil

Jim,
Good luck on the move. Wade Colter is about a 3.5 hour drive away from you in Colstrip, Montana. I'm not sure who else there is on that side of Montana.

Your friend always,
Scott

Thanks all
Well, Greatfalls and MS Ed Cafferty is just 135 miles away. In Montana 135 miles is considered very close. Haha. Also a nice guy who's name slips my mind, but, I have had some great conversations with a Blade West is a bit father in Lincoln, Josh Smith isn't far from 3 of my brothers near Missoula which is "only" 275 miles. The speed limit is 70 mph on 2 lane roads and on my last trip I was stopped at 85 on a lonely 2 lane road by a sheriff who just asked if I would slow it down a bit before he let me go on my way without a ticket. Lewistown is right in the middle of the state and I should be a focal point for my spread out brothers and sisters. 4 brothers 5 sisters. All but 1 in Montana. Also the annual family gathering is on the Missouri river just north of my new place. Memorial day matches up with the paddle fish run. These things are huge and a gas to catch. Plus the river and the lake has Sturgeon, catfish, huge walleys, trout, small mouth bass, northern pike and a bunch of other stuff. Plus the banks of the area are heavy with elk and some monster mule deer as well as antalope and a great many grouse and what not. Going to revert to my childhood dreams for a while. Jim

The best to you Jim. I know it has been a tough road as of late for you and I feel there is some good living coming your way at your new home. Hope to see some picks of your new shop, when you get set up.

Best regards, Fred
