Whats been happening with me

Everything is in Montana now. 2 Penski 22' trucks loaded with mostly tools and metal and various do dads. I have the last bits of household stuff in my Ford Escape and will be driving over Sunday to make the move official and start sorting out the huge mess and making my shop functional again. I figure that if I work at it every day I should have it sorted out and set back up in about 2 weeks. I will have to take breaks at the creek and the river though.

Congrats. I know you are getting excited about it almost being over with. Drive safe and take some good pics along the way.

Hi Jim,

It's good to hear your news. Pace yourself. Keep us posted. Welcome home!

All the best, Phil

Thanks all
Well, Greatfalls and MS Ed Cafferty is just 135 miles away. In Montana 135 miles is considered very close. Haha. Also a nice guy who's name slips my mind, but, I have had some great conversations with a Blade West is a bit father in Lincoln, Josh Smith isn't far from 3 of my brothers near Missoula which is "only" 275 miles. The speed limit is 70 mph on 2 lane roads and on my last trip I was stopped at 85 on a lonely 2 lane road by a sheriff who just asked if I would slow it down a bit before he let me go on my way without a ticket. Lewistown is right in the middle of the state and I should be a focal point for my spread out brothers and sisters. 4 brothers 5 sisters. All but 1 in Montana. Also the annual family gathering is on the Missouri river just north of my new place. Memorial day matches up with the paddle fish run. These things are huge and a gas to catch. Plus the river and the lake has Sturgeon, catfish, huge walleys, trout, small mouth bass, northern pike and a bunch of other stuff. Plus the banks of the area are heavy with elk and some monster mule deer as well as antalope and a great many grouse and what not. Going to revert to my childhood dreams for a while. Jim

Dude, you are living my dream. Congrats on everything working out well for you.

P.S. I believe the posted speed signs in Montana are 'suggested maximum' Are there actually any real limits there yet?

Therer is an actual speed limit here now and sometimes they actually give people tickets! Most of the time everyone is running 5 to 10 over which means they drive at 75 or so on 2 lane and 80 on the intestate. I have meet several staters while going 5-10 over and they don't even give me a second look.
I have started straightening out the mess and it will be interesting seeing all the stuff I forgot I had. LOL Lived in that house 10 years and I am a pack rat 1st class.

Jim, congrats on the move. And I understand about relative distances. Out here on the high plains of Texas, the nearest "city" to Lubbock is about 120 miles away. Heck, I drove that all the time to get to Amarillo for class. No biggie at all.

I remember when I was in school, kids used to make "suicide runs" to the mountains to go snow skiing. You leave after class on Friday, drive 250 miles to Ruidoso, NM, ski all day Saturday and Sunday, and then drive back Sunday night for class on Monday. Good times. :D

Yes anything here under about 150 miles is considered a short drive. I read somewhere that Montana has more miles of pavement per person than any other state in the Union. It figures because of its population being about 800,000 and its the 4th largest state. The other day I drove from the junction at interstate 90 to Helena, the state capitol, it was 4 in the morning and 40 some miles. I met 2 pickups and 2 trucks, no cars. During the day it would proply be under 40 other cars. At 4 am I drove around the capitol and all that was open was 3 gas stations. Not even an all night restaurant.

My aunt and uncle have relatives in Montana, and they said that they hate driving out there (from MI) because once you get into Montana, all there is is dead grass.

Per person, I have no doubt! Otherwise, as of 2004, Texas had 13,361 miles of total roadways. The next closes was California with 7,626. However, in rural roads, Montana is third on the list: Texas=8,750 miles, California=5,041 miles, and Montana=3,755 miles.

Lots of open roadways out in the big state of Montana.

Man what a mess. Ha ha. I got the stable cleaned out enough to store things and am moved in. I go to the shop every morning and sort stuff out and move it around some. trying to get organized enough to set the shop up. Plenty to do. Amazing how much crap I have. Slowly but, sure i am getting there. I think.

Keep up the clean up but make sure you get your plates changed as soon as possible if you haven't already.

I went on a detail to Willow Creek, Mt once. The guy there was amazed I didn't get a speeding ticket coming across from Shelby to Havre because I was running out of state plates. I was told the locals usually ticket out of state but leave residents alone unless the offense is really eggregious.

Phil. No pictures till I get the place part way cleaned up. I have stuff everywhere. I am getting it though. I am rewireing the shop space now. I am running wire before I setup my equipment. 6-20 amp 220v outlets, 1-50 amp 220v, 23-20 amp 110v. Then I have to repair all the 12" wide cuts I made in the sheet rock to install the wire. I never heard of anyone complaining they had to many outlets. Also making some shelves.

I really do like it here. Yesterday, I saw a sign that said. Off road racing, fairgrounds 3pm. I went. It was 5 bucks to get in. They had a track set up like a double question mark. The long straightaway was in front of the grandstand and a short acrossed it in front of the chutes they let the bucking horses and bulls out of. Ya, the fairgrounds here is a rodeo arena +. Anyway on the end of the long straightaway there was a big long 270 degree turn with big bumps in it and the a 90 back to the short straightaway. At the end of the short straight there was a fairly tight 180 with more bumps. They were running mostly older chevies with small blocks and some of them were pretty strong. Almost every cars sides were completely flattened. About the only requirements were a helmet, shoulder and seat belt, a full roll cage, mud flaps and a brake light. 3 heat races of 6 laps then the C main had 8 laps the B 10 and the A 12. Pushing, banging, shoving, No such thing as a black flag. If there was a wreck the held a yellow flag in front of it a ways and you slowed down if you wanted to. Wreck stayed where it was. It was wild. Then the cars that were left raced 20 laps for a $1000 purse. Lots of action and fun. Plus, when I drove home 3 little whitetail bucks came moseying out of my driveway.

I am going to keep working on the shop next week and should have it about ready to go. Then I am going to take a real long Labor day weekend and go to the Missouri river with my jetboat and some relatives and have some fun. Then the 14th of September I am going to do a good money, job at a refinery in Greatfalls for 3 weeks or so. 60 hrs a week. Then more time off. Should be able to make a few knives before big game season opens. I haven't got any tags because it was to late to apply as an out of state resident and I haven't been here long enough for resident. Next year. But, I will go out with friends and relatives and get a better lay of the land and the game near here. I have thought about sticking apples under the old swing set in my little pasture and then shooting a deer under it so it would be easy to hoist up, gut and skin. Its only about 80 or so feet from the freezer.
