What's CS's Best Bowie?

No doubt that CS produces some cool choices in Bowie knives. I guess as long as it fills your needs, it won't be a bad choice, no matter which CS Bowie one chooses. Here is a picture of a guy having used a Cold Steel 1917 Frontier Bowie for his Boar hunt... It obviously filled his needs, so it was a good choice 😀

The gentleman that took that boar is a good friend of mine, who got his Frontier Bowie from me after the one he used on the previous year's hunt did not perform to his satisfaction. His email when he sent the pictures said it was the best boar hunting knife he's ever used and that it almost took the fun out of it. He also included a picture of the boar's heart that was almost severed in two.

Who on Earth would want to go sticking pigs with a Bowie knife....................!!!!!!!!???

Ohh wait, that would be me! :D

This is a Humphrey, but big Bowie knives work just fine for that - Cold Steel included.

Anyone got the O-1 Laredo? Is the clip sharpened?

Like all the laredo bowies, the O-1 has its second edge "sharpened" but not to razor sharpness like the primary edge. It's purposefully left slightly duller than the primary edge to facilitate point penetration and cutting by the primary edge. You can sharpen the clip a bit more to make it just as sharp as the primary edge, if that's what you prefer. I don't recommend doing that, though, for several reasons. You can injure yourself more easily while practicing fancy moves and if you use it to baton wood, a razor sharp clip will only hinder your efforts.

Good to see someone who understands the physics of the Bowie's differently sharpened secondary and primary edge angles. Definite reasons they are that way.

I must say, this photo of your friend is the most legitly fearsome after hunt photo I have ever seen. First off, hunting a wild hog while using a knife as the life ending tool, has got to be pretty intense. Then one couples your friend showing a genuinely fierce look on his face, and him shown tightly holding his large knife, (bloody hands and all)... well, very cool. It would seem that your friend would be a good guy to have on one's side if ever there were a shtf scenario... lol! Congrats to him on his successful hunt, and for the extremely awesome photo taken afterwards ☺

He does a boar hunt every year and definitely is a very "interesting" individual with some special skills, and a great guy. We share the same pod at the Knob Creek Machine Gun Shoot (B-12). The first knife he got from me was the Boar Hunter/Collector and it performed flawlessly (I'll enclose a pic). On the following year. he took his son but gave him the CS Boar Hunter because he knew that worked very well, and picked another knife from somewhere that severely disappointed him. Not a good thing at close quarters with an angry boar. I showed him the CS Frontier Bowie, which had just become available, and we agreed it would make a good Boar Hunter .. or anything else it was needed for. I've seen some of the cell phone video they shot .... impressive and intense. Here's a pic of the hunt using the CS Boar Hunter/Collector.

Pretty impressive stuff, this boar hunting with dogs and knife stuff. I imagine that picture of him holding the CS 1917 Frontier Bowie, will cycle around and help Cold Steel sell a few more of those knives 😀

Awesome. This is something I would want to try myself. Beats hunting with a rifle for sure. How would the Natchez bowie fare for boar hunt?

In the past, I owned the CS SAN MAI NATCHEZ. At the time I was still making knives, and I was trying learn and understand as much as possible about large Bowie and their use. The Natchez was concealable, but it was a challenge. As far as that tang construction goes, I do not believe it would fail under normal use. The San mai was sharp, and stayed that way. Spooky sharp.

As far as hog hunting with a knife goes.....anybody who has done it, already knows.

The only Bowies I own are Cold Steel's Leatherneck SF, Bushman and arguably the R1 Military Classic. I love, love these knives. For the longest time I've had a serious hankering for the Trailmaster and Natchez, but just couldn't justify the purchase due to my current lifestyle and pocket book.

I'd like both of those things to change one day. We'll see what happens.

I am a huge fan of bowies and I own the CS bowie machete, san mai Natchez and sk5 laredo(That I have antiqued with a patina). I want to get the newer o1 Laredo with the black handle and leave the blade satin. I especially love the laredo as I think it's the perfect size and mass to do it all. The natchez is probably the most devastating weapon one can probably conceal of that size. The CS bowie machete is pretty nice as well for anyone on a budget. It's kinda like a poorman's natchez without a guard.
