What's going on with these bolsters?

So, I've been avoiding carrying this 45, I only take it out to admire and open it's massive blades. Today to my horror, I noticed these thick black lines on the corners of my bolsters. I don't know if these are new or came with the knife and went unnoticed. So what is the deal with these black lines?

Zooming in on the second from the bottom looks like corrosion from something. Are you storing it in a leather slip? It's really hard to tell from the pictures.

The nickel silver bolsters are subject to patina, just like the brass frame or 1095 blade steel. The acids in your perspiration and spittle will cause this, as will acids in tanned leather, etc. In this case, it may just be some scale that didn't get polished off at the factory. Actually very common to see dark specks/spots on the bolsters. Use some Flitz or Mother's Mag polish and it'll look like new. :)

Thanks, guys. Actually, I have just been keeping it oiled and stored in it's tube. I'm used to the discoloring from use but this is new to me. In person, it looks like someone took a sharpie to it. Collecting knives (vs using them) is new to me, thus it's ironic that this one may have come with a "flaw" from the factory. If I polish it off it won't be factory new anymore.. I may just have to use it!

Really, it's ruined forever. You should just send it to me for immediate disposal.

Yup. Ruined.

I just rub them on my jeans. If really drastic measures are called for, I will rub it on my strop.

But you are correct. It is no longer new at that point. You DO need to carry it!

Not only should you carry it, you should clean your nails with it in public and see how many people stare at the monstrous thing.

just bought some CVS mineral oil, this should be interesting. didnt know mineral oil was a consumable. thought it was legit oil. like 3-1. perhaps you need to put some on that?

Needs buffing with some metal polish and a cloth. One of the pics looks like they didn't finish the corner at the factory. Easy enough to fix with a little work.

It is "legit oil". It is highly refined such that it has no chemically reactive sites on the oil molecules, and it contains no additives. It's just pure aliphatic petroleum oil. It is so pure that it is not absorbed by the human body.

3-in-One contains additives and is not as pure as pharmaceutical grade mineral oil.

So, for my purposes, on knife protection, i dont have to worry about the expiration date? i really bought it cause Tim suggested I protect that TC better. I usually put 3 in 1 on all of my 1095s cause I dont handle food with them. Thanks for the advice and info you offer!

Keeps you regular. :D Seriously.

i did find it in the laxatives section which was surprising because I thought it was a home goods item. i got to work early because i needed to drop a package off at the usps and walked around rite aid aisles for 15 minutes looking. couldnt find it.

The more I look at it the more I feel like it just didn't get finished at the factory. I think I'll leave it on and let pocket carry sort it out.
I have been tearing myself up over whether to carry this knife or not. Honestly, I'm a bit relieved by this development. Sorry to disappoint anyone but this knife stays with me! It's easily my favorite GEC.

do you have to wear a fanny pack to carry this? :D

It's not a fanny pack!! It's a belted satchel! Just like Indiana Jones but around my waist.

You know as the years I have been into knives have gone by they look better and better to me with some patina and pocket wear going on, this is what your knife WANTS, surely you would not deny its request:D

I dare not deny the mighty #45, it might chop my fingers off if I do.

nah, gotta go bandolier like Chewie!

Dude, why has no-one come up with a knife bandolier? That'd be so much cooler than a knife roll at shows and gatherings. PM me, we're going to be rich!
