What's going on with this maple

This is some hard maple from a tree I felled five years ago. Some of it is like this. Swirls of cream and coffee colors. It is totally dense, no rot. Pictures are 120 sanded one wet, one dry. The dry is lighter.

What part of the tree is it from? Almost looks spalted, but could just be growth from a crotch or burl or knot, depending on where and how it was cut.

Don't really remember. It has ripples on the outside and some scales from this piece are curly. It is on a 45 degree bend and most likely from the crotch since I kept it for some reason. I have other prices that are birds eye that have the same look, but more extreme. I wasn't thinking spalted because it is very dense.

Spalting occurs over time so it's possible it's the beginning of some spalting. If you were to leave it wet and warm those lines might darken right up. Spalted wood is usually pretty firm anyway, it doesn't get punky unless it's left too long.

But it doesn't really look like that I'm guessing it's from a crotch.

It's hard rock maple. I felled this tree in my yard five years ago. Here's it stabilized. Some from other parts of the same tree, but the top picture is the stuff in question.
