Hi Folks,

I don't usually post here, but I thought about starting a thread with people posting pictures of what they've got growing/harvested in/from there 2009 garden. I'm a big vegetable gardener, but love to see any and all peoples garden success pictures.

Here is my first harvest of the 2009 gardening season.....Italian Heirloom Softneck Garlic....about 60 bulbs, give or take. My neighbor is an old Italian fellow, and he gave me the stock a few years back. This garlic was brought over from Italy by his grandfather in the late 1800's. Most of this will be planted next fall....so I can increase my harvest!!!

What have you folks got in the garden this year?

Bob,

Hershey, PA

Got no pics. And my wife is the gardener. I've got a black thumb.

Tomatoes
Lettuce
Zucchini
Cucumbers
Sweet Basil
Eggplant.
Chard

So far the tomatoes, zucchini, chard, and lettuce have been delicious.

Living in an apartment, there isn't much room to grow. Back when I was living at home, before leaving for college, I had a bunch of zucchini, cherry tomatoes, some corn, and an eggplant. The zucchini grew so big that we thought we'd never finish it off. Those tomatoes keep growing back every year, no matter how much we try to get rid of them, since we're not much for tomatoes. The corn was grown in some crappy soil, so they ended up pretty small but tasty. Lastly, the eggplant's roots were bit off by some damn gopher and died just as soon as it started growing.

knarfeng,

We've got no tomatoes as of yet, but they'll be a mess come mid-summer. I also growing a whole bunch of pickling cucumbers....didn't get to grow much last year with my shoulder surgery and all.

YayILikePie,

I used to grow eggplants too, just haven't planted them for a while. I wish I had the room to plant corn (sweet & popping corn). One year I planted both popping corn & giant sunflowers....my son was younger than and he wanted to plant something that would grow tall. Man, I know for a fact that some of those giant sunflowers grew to be almost 14' high.

Yeah, we did the sunflower thing before as well. They were so big that we had to break them into bits before we could toss them to the compost. There were so many seeds that we ended up just tossing a bunch away. They look really nice once they start growing though.

My whole garden is one pot.:D Jalapeño peppers. From the look of them I will be picking the first batch in just a few more days.

Tomatoes, chipotle pepper, jalapeno peppers, banana peppers, italian roasting peppers, molle peppers, chives, mint, thyme, horseradish, raspberries, blackberries, grapes.

OK, here we go. These photo's show my garden (limestone I hauled in with my pick-up...10 loads) and heavy gauge wire. I bought a cheap swinging fence for the entrance. The 2 small plants are my black raspberries, given to me by my buddy. The cottontails got at them a few weeks ago and ate all the leaves. I put up some plastic webbing and their coming back now. The last picture is a close-up of my bleeding hearts. They were blooming real good a few weeks ago.

Now here we have pictures of my ferned-out-asparagus, they produced very well this year. I probably got 10 big bunches-of-em. There are 2 beds...one is 5 years old & the other is 4 years old. Both are Jersey Knight variety. Right next to the asparagus, you can see my onion patch....I'm doing successive plantings of my onion sets this year, instead of all at once. I can't seem to keep a large number of onions from rotting (any help/tips on drying/storing would be appreciated) The next photo shows my 3 year old unharvested horseradish plant. I usually pull up the roots every 2 years in mid-fall....but I couldn't do it last year....because of the shoulder injury. There will be a ton of nice size horseradish fingers this year. The last photo is of my pickling cucumbers....burpee.....variety. I planted the first batch and we got 7 straight days of Sunami Rain, they all rotted. This batch is about 35-40 days sewed.

O.k., Last post for today.

The first photo is of a couple of tomato plants from our local market. They are doing quite well so far. The next photo is of my Roma Heirloom variety....you guessed it, the plat came from my 70 some year old Italian neighbor. The strain has been in his family since the 1800's....just like the garlic. The next photo is of my 1 Habanero and 2 Jalapeno pepper plants. They were put in last cause I couldn't find any till later in the season.....but that was my own fault. The last phot is of my grape tomato plant....given to me by my neighbors wife.

I don't have a ton of room to work with so I have flowers only: Roses, Butterfly bushes, Verbena, Snapdragons, Impatiens, Petunias, Lillies, Marigolds, Astras, Dahlias and Sunflowers in a bed and along a walkway. I have a pot with some herbs coming along nicely and two hanging baskets with Forget-Me-Nots I'm growing from seed. I own what's actually referred to as a garden apartment so I put effort into making the area outside my unit look nice, plus I find it relaxing.

This is what I've planted this year.

Trees--Peach, nectarine,cherry,and apple

Berries--Blueberry,raspberry,strawberry,

Vegetables--Pole beans, potatoes, cantaloupe, squash,
zucchini,corn,lettuce,broccoli,tomatoes,

Relocation Program--ground squirrels, rabbits, squirrels. These 3 are my arch enemies. Now and then one might fall in a wheel barrow full of water.

Results--So far I'm tired.

I would guess so....

That's a lot of work, but I'm sure you'll be eating good this fall and in future years.

Relocation Program--ground squirrels, rabbits, squirrels. These 3 are my arch enemies. Now and then one might fall in a wheel barrow full of water.

The cottontails here in Hershey, PA are everywhere. We have a decent population of Hawks that claim this area as their hunting grounds. Even still, the rabbits are out of control.....I usually take a few after the first frost in fall....they make pretty good jerky....me and the pups love it.

My little organic garden. Tomatoes, assorted herbs, yellow squash, peppers and okra. The marigolds came up volunteer.:)

grybsh7,

Very nice looking garden you've got going there. The setting is just beautiful....although, do the critters (rabbits, whitetails, ground hogs) give you problems? Looks like your in prime "critter country"?
