What's happened to CPF?

Thanks a ton elp_unix, I have been freakin out for over 12 hours. later. Doug:)
Update! unable to click on any threads, sends you back to the domain crap! ugh! shaking again!

Joe,
You are a special case as well you know. ;)

That goes without saying! But, I still think you guys are insane, it's been working fine for me 'lo these past several hours.

It now appears pretty obvious that the problem is a new server IP address and that several internet domain servers have not yet been updated with this new IP address -- those of us affected will just have to wait for the domain server updates to get fully implemented.

Hey, do you think that Kevin will mind if we start to discuss flashlights here? :D
(Maybe if we limited ourselves to brands carried by 1SKS?) :D

I can see the opening page using the numerical link given above, but I can't get into any of the CPF threads.

I am also amazed to see how many people are members of both CPF and BF. I got the Knife Disease after being infected on the CPF Knife Forum.

if you must read posts at cpf and you still get the dns thing, it can be done but its a pain. i did it like this:

the good ip is 209.67.62.186
some dns servers aren't yet configured to the correct address, so once you click on one of the links on http://209.67.62.186/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php you'll be sent back to the domaindiscover registration service page because if you take a look at the link its pointing to www.candlepowerforums.com/ubbthreads/postlis?yadayada...etc.
what you need to do is copy and paste the link shortcut of the thread you want to see into your browser and substitute the www.candlepowerforums.com with the ip address 209.67.62.186

this gets nasty real fast, but if you need to check a couple of posts its ok. thats the way i did it.

Same here, I can paste the Ip and get in but still can't navigate
Guess my "non-flashlight" stuff ain't selling!

I had no problem until now, but now it's happening to me too. I found some workarounds, though -- for Windows users:

If you are using WINDOWS, do a search for a file called hosts (no extension)

EDIT the file and add a line as below:

Code:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

209.67.62.186 http://www.candlepowerforums.com

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

the space inbetween the two is a single tab

Save the file (be sure there is no file extension), then re-boot.

That should do it.

Mac users go to Availability Problems with CPF and Work Arounds for equivalent instructions.

Actually you don't have to reboot, at least not if you're using Windows -- you only have to close and restart your browser. Your browser only reads the hosts file when you start it.

If you use this fix remember to remove that line from your hosts file after this is all over. The IP will eventually change, and if that line is still in your hosts file your computer will still go to that IP.

Here is snip from CPF providing some insight on the problem:

"Sasha said:

OFFICIAL STATEMENT!!

The problem is that the domain name is not pointing to the correct server which is Digital Princeton. DO NOT start bashing our server or emailing them or otherwise blaming or harrassing them for our problems!!! This is not their fault and they are under no obligation whatsoever to fix it!! However, Steve at Digital Princeton was kind enough to help me out tonight and the fix has been made. The bad news is that it will take some time. We will have to wait for it to propagate through YOUR servers! This is not something that CPF or DomainDiscover or Digital Princeton can speed up or control. You will just have to wait it out.

Adjusting the host files as has been posted here will overcome the problem but be sure to change your settings back once you can get into CPF without that change in host setting. I think the longest it should take for anyone is about 48 hours.

Please be patient and pass this information on to anyone you can contact who may not be able to get in to read this.

Thanks everyone!"

Charlie...

Thanks for the info on the CPF DNS problem. I still can`t get on. Hopefully the wait won`t be too long.

I`m not that computer savy, so I won`t try any of the excellent self-help aides posted by others unless absolutely necessary. :p

Best wishes to all. :)

Yup yup. What a small world huh?

Damn, I have tried the workaround every which way I can try, frustrating as hell!!! Didn't realize how much I depend on CPF for my daily entertainment, I need help:D I guess I am resolved to just wait patiently instead of check every 3-4 minutes to see if it's up yet, may have to take up television:mad: Hopefully soon it'll be back, I'm tired of trying to configure the hosts file successfully, damn tired! Doug:)

Some more hints I've picked up that might help:

Apparently some versions of Windows or some systems might have more than one hosts file, and adding that line to the wrong one won't fix it. The one you want is just "hosts" with no extension -- not hosts.sam, not hosts.txt, just plain hosts.

I said above you don't have to reboot, but apparently with some versions of Windows you do, and some people have said they had to delete their caches too before it would work.

More at http://209.67.62.186/ubbthreads/sho...=385952&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1 -- good luck!

I know what that tired of messing with your computer feeling is ... maybe if you're too fed up to work on it any more tonight, well, you might feel more inclined to plunge back into it tomorrow ... or by tomorrow it might not be a problem any more; it's likely to be fixed by then ... or maybe later tonight, who knows when the new IP will wend its way to your DNS server....

Thanks Cougar,
I couldn't find a hosts file except for the hosts.sam file. I did edit it and dropped off the extension. Otherwise no other hosts file on my computer. I guess I just have to be patient, although it's not one of my better character traits:D Anyway thanks for the help and take care. Doug:)

AAAHHH,
