What's happening in the David Mary Custom shop?

Basically, jbmonkey jbmonkey , there is never not dust. There's enough dust from knife materials on my shop floor in the hard to reach spots for the broom that I could make a hundred or more knives.

If I were to wash that drill press perfectly clean today, it would look like that again Wednesday.

gotcha dust.

I wouldn't do it, due to the sizes of the dust and danger of it, but I'd sure be tempted to take the blower to the shop and blow it out.......

Got the drill press shaft back in place, just took opening the unit and jiggling the drive wheels a bit as I lined it up. Minus the return spring, of course, since I don't have a spare. So it works, but I have to manually pull it back up every time, as well as hold it in the top position when lining up to drill pin holes... Minor inconvenience. But I measured the broken spring before I left the shop, and have a replacement ordered now. Actually I could only find it in a 2 piece package, so I guess I will have a spare now.

And I got nearly half a dozen more knife handles assembled with preliminary shaping as well today. I am holding off on pics for now.

Now I understand why they send two pieces. One for each clockwise and counter clockwise. So I don’t have a backup. I actually didn’t pay attention and put the wrong one in first. Was a struggle since I’ve never done this before. Second time as a snap and the “spare” is just junk. Which is fine. The only thing is I noticed that I forgot to measure the width of the spring so my new one is a little narrower despite the thickness and diameter being perfect.

And my drill’s vertical cycle sounds funny now. Oh well I won’t be using it with the power off!

It’s probably going to snap again sooner than five years (which upon reflection is about how long I’ve been using this drill press), but now I know what to do when that happens and it won’t be a problem.

And these two, because even though they are ROFR and not on a schedule, they are a couple I’ve been puttering away on, and the other two orders with higher priority are four knives each, and would not be ready for postal run this week anyway. These two can be.

Well at least you didn't have to replace the entire rig.

You're not kidding about that dust btw, I recently had to sand/lathe some ebonywood and it's shocking just how long the finer dust stays in the air. Had a mask on but it irritated my eyes.
