whats in a name ?

"survival", "spec", "ops", "tac", "bushcraft" are marketing nonsense and I would never buy, or suggest buying, any knives with any of those in their name.

I don't, personally, like TOPS, but they have the best names in the industry. Devil's Elbow? Street Scalpel? Baghdad Boxcutter? Come on! Priceless. And "Cockpit Commander" makes me giggle uncontrollably.

How can you stop yourself from buying a BAGHDAD BOXCUTTER?! I mean c'mon, without even knowing what that knife looks like I bet it is prime "Infidel-killing" material! It's almost unpatriotic of you NOT to own one, honestly.

I agree that TOPS probably has the best, as in worst, names in the industry. I like Szabo designs and TOPS offers a Szabo designed model they call the [gag] "Felony Stop" I could maybe live with the name if it wasn't embossed in huge letters on the handle! So I just can't do it but there most be a lot of people who like that kind of absurdity.

The names don't bother me near as much as the discriptions of the knife,

Usually reads something like this

Taliban Slayer Tactical Laser Guided Death Machine

the Taliban Slayer Tactical Laser Guided Death Machine was developed by 36 retired and active Navy Seals, Marines, and Black Ops Specialists with over 10,000 years of combined expierence, this knife has been deployed in every condition known to man, and some that aren't, we sent one of the Taliban Slayer Tactical Laser Guided Death Machine to an alien planet where operator's said that this knife could easily slice through alien dinosaur ninja's without ever needing a sharpening. This knife is so BAD A$$ that our warranty is 100% guaranteed for kitchen usage only, anything other than slicing Tomatoes or Soft Cheeses voids our warranty.

Any of this sound familiar?

The name that I wont buy is "8Cr13MOV".
I loathe that steel. Nomatter how much I like the looks of the knife, if I see "8Cr13MOV" i turn away.

But actual names, I dont care. The name doesnt affect anything.

Exactly. This and those names that imply murderous intent. Makes me question who companies think they're marketing to.

I completely agree, there are really only TWO kinds of knives, folders and fixed, any other words are merely ploys to trick the weak of mind

These threads always bring out the knife snobs, those of us who know better than to buy into "the hype", we are not swayed by words and any attempt to sell us silly knives with descriptive names WILL be met with ridicule and truculence

Interestingly I've had great success with most of my knives that have this steel, in terms of ease of sharpening and cutting power, etc. Sorry to hear you don't like it, but I didn't invent it or anything and I'm sure there's lots of steels out there you prefer and enjoy. :)

Busse's knife names turned me off to their product for a long time. Great knives tho. Some pretty functional designs in the stable. Others not so much but the names are kind of a joke . Maybe the names are a joke? Hmm....

Silly names are just that - silly. I prefer simple model designations.
I'll take Model 1, Model 2, and Model 3 over the silliness any day.

Names don't really bother me much at all, though to be honest the RAT and Onion put me off for a little while. Cold Steel has some over the top names but then Cold Steel is a little over the top in itself. I enjoy knives for their beauty, form, and function, names are just an after thought for me.

Haven't seen a single Microtech that didn't make me groan or giggle. A lot of the Brous models are the same. The only company I haven't laughed at the names of was ZT (aside from the MUDD) because they use model numbers for everything.

I also laugh at almost every Cold Steel model name.
