That little image that we use to represent ourselves. The image in my avatar is a photograph of the first knife in AEB-L that I made for a good friend of mine. I made that knife maybe about a year and a half before I was laid off and took the plunge into knife making for a living. At first I used it because at the time, it represented the culmination of all the knowledge and skill I had gained in my knife making hobby. I have often thought about changing my avatar to something more recent, but on the other hand, I also like the idea of stability and consistency, and each change of the avatar would seem to betray that to some degree. So for now, I have left it along, although sometimes I wonder if I should update my avatar just one more time with something more directly related to my work, like my maker's mark, or a close up shot of a knife with my mark. I'd love to hear others' opinions on this.

And also, how do you guys and gals choose your avatar? What do you want it to say about you?

My avatar ("El Diablo") started out as a simple doodle with a black marker 20+ years ago. It reminded me of a college friend from Costa Rica who had a mustache and a bit of beard. He liked Frank Zappa. Then it morphed a wee bit when my kids and I started using Paint Shop Pro (an old program, free at first). I may still have my original doodle on a post-it note.

When I joined BF I was just getting into traditional slipjoints, and the Ka-Bar Dog's Head Barlow was the first one that really connected with me. We had a Beagle at the time, so it seemed like a perfect fit -- the Beagle shield from that knife.

That pup died, and I sold the knife, but the avatar still feels right. It hasn't aged well with the new forum software; it's too low-resolution for a profile image, for example (although still OK alongside my posts). But I like it anyway. :)

Mine is Frazetta's Princess of Mars, the first book in the Martian Tales/John Carter series. One of my favorite artists, and one of my favorite book series. And it's got a blade!

a reminder that factory sharp knives (one of the First 20 people who got the Becker BK62 knife) can be REALLY sharp!!! haha :/

*but for You..... I agree that you should have Your Makers Mark in your icon..... on a fav knife.
I also agree about consistency and not changing them often.

First test missile launched from a submarine I served on. With all of the work that went into getting to that moment, it was one of the most rewarding professional experiences during my time in the Navy.
