On it- 6' of woodland camo paracord

That's all. Sorry, no pics at the moment.

I was not aware that the metal match came with a compass and a hollow section in the handle? Do you have any pictures or dimensions of the inside of the handle? I like my setup now but may have to buy one of these for my spare kit.

Nothing55, I just picked up my first ESEE fire kit & have already swapped out the firesteel for a 5" rod. I have jute twine jambed in the bottom, 1ea. alcohol pad / 1ea trick birthday candle / 2ea N.A.T.O. matches / 3ea. Tinder Quick fire tabs. Also attached is the striker from Going Gear, & a Photon Freedom Micro-Light II. I may get hungry, but I damn well better not freeze to death . . . :)
Be safe.

That's a real nice set up you've got there. I'm quite a firesteel addict but haven't got around to the ESEE fire kit. it is on the wish list; in fact I can see me getting several.

One question though: is the steel misch metal or ferrocerium (sp?), does anyone know?

look inside the handle , if you see a phillips screw head you have a misch rod , if no screw you have a standard ferro rod

this is my favorite one ,I added a longer misch rod too

Made this firesteel loop for my fire kit on my 4. Crappy indoor lighting/flash.

Be careful using dryer lint guys, I would highly recommend getting a jar of vaseline and a bag of cotton balls (100& cotton) for $4. You can make about 300 pj cotton balls for that. Dryer line doesn't burn very long and with the additives in detergents, it can give the lint a greasy feel which makes it not light all that well sometimes. I made the switch long ago and will not go back to lint!

IT's about 2cm Circumference and 4 cm deep...

Where do you guys get Misch rods at. I've got 2 from Firesteel.com but I hear from 1 person that they're non-misch and from another that they are misch. (Since I see no claims on their site of being Misch I asume that it is not.)

God bless,
Adam

TTD, has Jeff & Mike set up your direct deposit on their "Preferred Shopper's Account " yet ??? :)
Man, that is some serious stash of ESEE items, quite impressive to say the least. Thanks for the other posts where you showed all of your knife kits, learned a few different ideas from them.
Good shots as well.
Be safe.

How did you get the rod out?

Thanks for the info texastonydobbs, but now you've given me a big dose of ESEE envy! I want that many sharps and firesteels!

Some other great set ups shown too guys, keep 'em coming!

+1 for GoingGear too, great service! I do like Firesteel.com's stuff too, I thought that theirs were misch too, but could be wrong.

I keep a bit of steel wool, some fatwood shavings, and cotton balls in mine, and a GoingGear striker tied to it with some elastic string. I don't have a good camera with me here at work, just my cell phone camera:

I think maybe too big a deal is made over the type of rod in the newer ESEE fire kits. I have several misch metal rods from GoingGear.com, and recently added the ESEE fire kit (it is the new model, rod is epoxied in, not screwed in). From everyone's comments, I was expecting the sparks from the ESEE fire rod to be lame or not as effective, but it really does a pretty good job.

Just last night I was playing with it, pried out rotted-out wood from a termite-infested tree in my yard, and started a fire with it. The sparks caught in the punk wood and I was able to blow on it to ignite my wood shavings, no cotton or fat wood needed, just some dead twigs and cut shavings from them, and the punk wood. I did use a GoingGear striker, I hate the thought of scraping my nice sharp knife across the metal :D.
