My kit consists of a ranger band, bandaids, a gauze pad, strike anywhere matches, plastic baggy, rubber bands, thread, tinfoil, a toothpick, a birthday candle, a fishhook, a plastic bait, fishing line, and duct tape inside an altoids tin, with a paracord bracelet, a compass (usually my cammenga), a leatherman st300, and either my stowaway bk11 or a bk7, possibly both. Open to suggestions.

I see you have thread, but no needle? Also, something for signaling. I use bright stuff sacks, blaze orange if available. Hang them in a tree like a wind sock or wave them around. Maybe even cut into strips if needed to mark your trail for SAR. Don't forget a whistle.

thatotherguy, I think you hold the record for post count. :D 78 in 2 days.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that the whistle is on my pack strap, the lid of the tin is polished for signalling, I have Morse code instructions for the flashlight in my pocket, and the outside of the tin is coated in orange duct tape. I do need a needle though. Thanks for the post. :)

I'm sorry but with out pics none of this actually exists. ;)

A lighter is always good backup to matches. Mini bic's are small and light. I keep a nice military tarp one side camo the other brown nice n thick. Possibly a poncho being wet sucks if it's cold. A few freeze dried food or the little sides you get at the super market that have broccoli n rice or something. They are dirt cheap and can be made with just water. You can add a filter straw should be good for 20 gallons or so. Extra 550 paracord, extra pair of socks. Finger nail clips don't take much room. I would add some quick tinders or something that will burn in wet weather. Parabolic lens to start fire as backup and uses light never runs out. Might want to consider yoyo fishing real, it will fish for you while your doing other things. You could get some speed hooks, basically a pre made snare that uses hooks. I like a compact head lamp so you can work in dark with 2 hands. Small sharpening stone. Canteen or durable water bottle, can't beat military canteen cup combo. Just off the top of my head.

Pics or it didn't happen otherguy.

I would beef up your first aid a little more. Add some benadryl, some sorta burn cream, antiseptic, militarily has bug spray but it's n a tube and it's a rub on cream, water proof boonie hat, nice hiking socks, 3 piece miltary sleeping bag system, pair of gloves like mechanix something durable n light, wouldn't hurt the buy a sas survival guide n throw it n your pack or just read it, it's nice to have a fork spoon combo. Remember that small hooks can catch big fish but not the other way around. And 1 hook isnt enough when they take up no space or weight. I would use quality braided fishing line. Sorry so much but if you get everything put it in your pack and it's to heavy take some things out. You can survive with just a knife and fire steel but you have to really know your sh!t. Any info you can read about edible plants making traps starting fires with sticks really could make the difference between surviving and dying. Knowledge is power but get out to the woods and practice when you get free time so you know what your doing when the time comes.

Take a breath, champ! This is my basic kit, what you described is my whole pack! :D
And as far as the first aid goes, I have a decently comprehensive FAK in the pack, and a clean bandanna in my pocket. I may need more, but dang! What happened to surviving with a knife and a good attitude?:D This is an "oh sh*t" kit, so if I get seperated from my pack I have a fighting chance!

Ah, your topic was what is in your backpacking survival kit.... Didn't realize it was a basic kit. None the less there are a lot of small light weight items that are nice to have. I just try and throw out as many suggestions as I can and pick and choose what you want. Just most of the things in my B.O.B. I thought it was your survival pack, not a small kit you take when you go backpacking. Sorry for to much info.

Band aids
Space blanket
Mileanhour tape (20 meters)
Glow stick
Maglite solitaire
Meru folder
Hacksaw blade
Jute
Baby Ruth
Salt and sugar
Mirror
Ziplock bag
Cordage

Not pictured: Fire steel, paracord bracelet and BK14, whistle, needle and thread, super glue.

This all fits into a cargo pocket and is on my person because it won't do much good if it's in a ruck floating down the river.
