Whats in your bug out bag?

Since this was posted in General Blade Discussion we should assume he's asking what knife (or knives) is in your bug out bag.

We also have a Wilderness & Survival Forum and a Gadgets & Gear Forum where people discuss other gear in their bug out bags.

So I shouldn't mention the .45 cal pistol, two spare magazines, panty hose, chocolate, and condoms?

I have a swamp rat camp tramp with my hunting bag. I suspect I would grab it up in a crisis.

I actualy carry a bunch of contingency stuff.
Are you talking about in theater (OCONUS) or in US (CONUS)??
In my truck in the US I keep a KBar, a CLS bag, Leatherman, Spyderco, Chemlights, Strobe light, flashlights a VS-17 pannel and a bottle of water.
In Iraq I carried a bunch more stuff.

I don't have a bug out bag, I have a bug out ammo can behind the seat of my truck, and see it as more of an emergency kit that will do me a lot of good in case of apocalypse. It has a stainless Mora in it. I would have put my Ratmandu in there, but I tried to keep the cost of the entire can below $50 so I could replace in case it was stolen. I also keep a fiskars hatchet behind my seat.

I've noticed that when I put nice knives in my BOBs, I need them for something, then I forget to put them back. The Mora will do anything I need it too, and I will never grab it because I need it around the house or camp.

The condoms must be in case if it's just you and a hot chick left on this world, and you don't want kids around to bother the two of you:rolleyes:!

I've got a Frost Grizzly Skinner in there along with an old Leatherman. Also a folding shovel.

Well just as far as what knives I have in there, this is my list:

Benchmade model 100 fixed blade
Cold Steel Ti-Lite
Cold Steel Medium Vaquero fully serrated
Victorinox Camper
Leatherman Wave

MY BOB bag is a black EOD bag from countycomm, I find tis the perfect size for what I have to carry...I also keep my sharpmaker in it as well for sharpening on the road if needed...

As far as knives go I've got a PE Griptillian in the side pouch of my Fatboy and depending on which Fatboy I have with me there's also a smaller Dozier model FB or a RAT3 on the strap behind the bag. Along with Leatherman multis in all my bags too. I've also got a RAT 7 in D2 floating around my vehicle too just in case.:)

I have a CS Canadian Belt Knife and a Gerber Recoil multi-tool in the Fatboy. The bigger BoB has a 7" Ka-Bar and 12" Ontario machete. I also add those pen shaped diamond sharpeners.

Bug out was an old military phrase used in the early '60's by kids playing WWII - yeah, I know, it dates me.

So a bug out bag is the one you grab for when TSHTF - another old military phrase.

I do like the concept of not putting your best knife in it - nobody I know would want a nice $150 fixed blade ripped off when the tool bag behind the truck seat gets ripped off - it's happened to me. Loaned it to nice people, too. So keeping the price down, and having an effective, but relatively inexpensive blade there for the largely sharpened-prybar jobs makes a lot of sense.

Add in, I tend to grab the nice knife going out, too. It would never be in the bag. I don't know how others who put in expensive knives in their kit just to sit for months - other that to brag about it "being" there, or suffering from more cash than common sense! Send it my way!

I keep a Victorinox Hunter with a Boy Scout striker in my kit. The fixed blades stay out because the bags go to work, and would create a big stink if seen by co-workers who have a false sense of security about the lack of potential terrorism. Their biggest worry is getting between a coworker and a divorcing spouse. When the bag goes on the road, a Nimravus.

If I'm worried I need something bigger than that, a Stanley FUBAR.

I don't have those things in my BOB, but I do that them in my party bag.

That's a very good point. I never tie up too much hard earned cash in something that is going to sit idle for a long time (hopefully). I do, however do not go cheap. A USMC Ka-Bar and Ontario machete are reliable and proven tools that will be of good service when needed. Plus I would not want a good custom attracting any attention in a Bug Out situation where unscrupulous predators are out looking for an opportunity to steal something.

From Dr. Strangelove (of course)

Major T. J. "King" Kong: Survival kit contents check. In them you'll find: one forty-five caliber automatic; two boxes of ammunition; four days' concentrated emergency rations; one drug issue containing antibiotics, morphine, vitamin pills, pep pills, sleeping pills, tranquilizer pills; one miniature combination Russian phrase book and Bible; one hundred dollars in rubles; one hundred dollars in gold; nine packs of chewing gum; one issue of prophylactics; three lipsticks; three pair of nylon stockings. Shoot, a fella' could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with all that stuff.
