What's in your handle?

I just picked up a CR Sable IV. Very nice piece, very sharp, great balance and the sheath really makes it for me.

I want to start to put some "essentials" in the hollow handle. I want to know what you stick in the handle when you go out in the field?

Thanks,
Tom

Tom, nothing comes in the handle.

That's up to you to decide.

Matches would be a good start.

Maybe money.

I got bandaides in my Shadow III. Handles too small for much else. Some water purification pills would fit, I guess.

Love the knife!

A flint and some money.

If you think you're going to run into the guys (Spark and Mike) from 1st Stop Knife, then your money should look like this: (Thanks to James Mattis for Spark's tutu pic.)

Or you could always grind down the top of one of your car keys and put that in; what are the chances that you would loose your sheath knife and car keys at the same time...?

Ive got a Shadow III too, and Frank's right...You cant get much in there!

The only thing I put into mine was a laminated card with My name, address and phone #, Just fot that small chance that if I ever lose it, I might have a chance in hell in getting it back...Hey! It could happen

We have gone around and around on whether to put items into the handles of the fixed blades or not - but have always ended up with the understanding that you know what you want in it - the suggestions here are evidence of that!

Our suggestion includes items like matches and a striker pad, water purification pills, pain killers, safety pins, identification of some kind. Take just a couple of each item, and wrap them in squares of plastic kitchen wrap. This acts as an excellent shock absorber.

Matches and/or ferrocium rod, H20 tablets, fishing hooks, line, aluminum foil, ID.

Or, your Amex card and about $5,000 in US currency.

Wouldn't it be cool (I want royalties if this is a hit and I reserve all rights) if CRK made just a hollow handle with the male and female threads that matched the handle on the knife. This way you could piggy back a few of these and store tons of stuff. When they were off the knife, a few of them would make a handy baton. Just put the aluminum cap on the top of the last one. CRK could make a thread furrell to cover the male end of the first one. The possibilities are endless.

I have a MK-VI, which contains the following items in the handle:
10 waxed strike anywhere matches
1 small spool of dental floss
1 magnetised needle
+/- 24" duct tape

Thanks for the great replies everyone! A lot of very good ideas. Sounds like we could have a chalange going to see how much we can fit in our handle.

C4...If I run into those two like that I'm running the other way or I'll be glad I've got my Sable on me

Scott Dog....You'd better what out or you'll be in the dog house or the big house

.

Nimrod...Is that$5,000 in fifties or hundreds? If I had $5,000 disposable income to stick in a handle, it would be spent on some really nice knives.

Once I see if I can stick "5 pounds in a 2 pound bag" I'll let you know what I'm able to fit in the handle.

Take care,
Tom

Just found my old hollow handled survival package which I had made up quite a few years ago for my Project. I don't have much use for it now and it needed refreshing as the fishing leader material tends to disintegrate over time so it ended up in a draw.
Here is what was in it:
4x pheasant tail dry flies.
10x hooks, mainly size 14.
2x mini swivels.
20x split shot.
At least 15 ft of nylon double strength leader material, 10lbs breaking strain.
At least 7ft of micro para cord/backing material, 30/40 lbs breaking strain.
At least 15 ft of tent sowing thread.
A mini brass compass.
A flint.
A small piece of hacksaw blade.
6x needles, two stout with large eyes.
4x band aids.
Wrapped in electrical tape.
There was still room for some puritabs.

I don't pack the handle much anymore. I use a tin/mini toolbox and pack that for the occasion depending on what I am going to do and where I am going.

The fine para cord and some Compeed plastic plasters complement the knife better for day to day use. I'm forever catching cuts and grazes when out and about and the string always has a use.

Hint: if you do pack the hollow fairly tightly then enduse you make a cord pull out sustem, as otherwise you end up having to dig the stuff out with a stick. (The item you need is always at the bottom).

Can I fit my Umfaan in a Shadow IV?

McGuyver- Duct Tape, YES!
