Could anyone with a fire kit snap a quick picture or describe what you're able to fit in there?

Thanks!

i have a fire steel , alcohal (rubbing) (fire starteing and popcan stove) cotten balls, steel wool and batteries, and an old fire piston

I just keep some vaseline soaked cotton balls in mine. I think I was able to fit 3 or four of them in there. I keep a small SAK attached to as well. The blade makes a good dedicated striker and the tweezers help keep the cotton ball strands out.

I've posted these pics way too many times so sorry to those of you who've seen them before:)

I think he means the RAT kit with the Misch metal rod attached to the little green container.

I just keep tinder in there. I have 3, maybe 4 pieces of wadded cotton with a big chunk of petroleum jelly in the center of each. I figure if I'm using an emergency firestarter, it'd be a good idea to have tinder that is easy to light.

I haven't found anything better than the aforementioned pjcb's. Easy start, long burn, water resistant. Can probably get two or three fires worth inside. It's slightly messy, but so what?

i ordered mine on sunday, so i was just trying to get a feel of how many cotton balls i could fit. could be time to finally retire my film canisters.

would a wetfire package fit in there or is it too narrow?

Mine is stuffed with wax infused jute twine. I also replaced my misch metal bar with one that's 1" longer.

how easy is it to replace the rod itself ?

ALthough it says "replaceable" rod, RAT doesn't sell them and is it screwed in? (mine is in the car in my go bag) Which would require at least having a hole drilled in the end of the rod. I don't know of anyone who has replaced a rod, but we'll see.

BTW I have PJ cotton balls in mine.

i didn't see them listed on the site. i was just wondering how they screwed in and if i'd be able to get a longer rod from going gear and pop that in if the supplied rod gets used.

warning do not drill the misch rod wearing sweat pants or you could combust .
Drilling & misch rod ,watch for flames.

so just drill through the top of the rod? gotcha. and thanks for the photos tony!

I replaced my rod on my Fire Kit. I bought a new one from Goinggear, unscrewed the one in there and took the rod off. Then I tapped the new rod with a starter hole, slid it in place and screwed it in. It took about 5-10 minutes at the most. I did use a cordless drill and an extension to reach the screw at the bottom.

** Don't try this in your livivng room, there are some sparks.**

I don't know what the mix is exactly, but I've found the rat rods to burn better than my firesteel.com or going gear rods. That said, there is some variance in the diffrent production runs on the rats.

I just keep basic cotton balls in mine.

Another addition I did was sliding a piece of inner tube over the capsule. It's a little loose, so to take up the slack I slid my hacksaw blade in there also. It makes the whole kit more compact, and the rubber burns great.
