What's in your RAT fire kit?

Right now I have a wetfire in mine, but I may swap that out for some steel wool, seems overkill to use the RAT kit for the wetfire but then again it is last ditch. I'm wondering though, I used mine to test it/get used to it, and I found that it chattered a lot, and now I have a nice set of ridges across the rod running the length. What am I doing wrong? only got a couple of good strikes, but wow, they were huge. I was using the edge of my RC3 if that helps.
 
I hold the blade at 90 degrees, or angled forward. Only thing I can think is if you had it angled back it may have bit into the rod, causing the chattering
