I built a raised bed flower garden last weekend and today I am going to be planting. Everyone keeps telling me I'm late in doing so, but oh well. I'm in DE and it's been cold a few nights.

This is my first year growing anything at all so I'm not expecting much. I'm going to buy plants so I don't have to start any seeds.

I made a bed in L shap that is 10' in each direction and 5' wide. I used untreated 2"x12"s stood on thier side. I have a bout 6-7"s of top soil in it right now and will be adding manure/humus mix to it today. (I had to teach my dog that it isn't a big sand box...)

I plan on growing tomatoes, plum tomatoes, bell pepper, jalapeno, squash, zuccini, leaf lettuce, onion, garlic (in the fall), egg plant if I can find plants and anything that pops out to me while I'm getting plants.

I've got more rabbits around my yard than you can shake a stick at so that I can see that as beeing an issue with growning anything.

Any help would be greatly appreciated since I'm a rookie.

What do you grow?

This year we have two varieties of tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, bell peppers, green beans, peas, onions, carrots and raspberries.

Be careful with that squash and zuccini. It sounds like you have a smaller area, and it takes up a lot of space, and a little goes a long way! Usually it is a first time mistake to have zuccini coming out of your ears, and not knowing what to do with it :D

I don't have the time or space for a full on garden so I keep it simple. I have a bed of mixed salad greens, escarole, three types of lettuce, cabbage etc. I also have some snow peas, chives and garlic.

I also tend to plant things in random spots around the yard. I have some onions and potatoes in between the rocks.

I've got some different type of squash this year. water melon, cantaloupe soon, and we've done some maters and peppers. I've also got a deer stand next to it :P

Nothin' yet. We usually don't plant until Memorial Day weekend or so due to the fact it's quite possible to get a killing frost before then. We usually plant lot's of tomatoes, green peppers, banana peppers, jalapenos, green beans, broccilli, cauliflower, a couple of pumkin plants for the kidos. Sweet corn doesn't do to well because the deer and raccoons work it over pretty good. We can and freeze alot which saves money during the winter and my wife is a tomatoe eating machine so the canned ones really come in handy. The past few years been rough due to drought like conditions but we still have enough to let the neighbors come over and help themselves.

Ours is raised beds also. Keeps the rats out better or so it seems. Allows us to control drainage better also. We have growing this year,

Cucumbers,
Tomato both grape and cherry (sweet 100)
butter beans
pumpkins
artichokes
gords for bird houses
sunflowers because we love the birds they attract and the seeds
some dill weed and rosemary, and I think one or two other herbs we like.

Rather small this year compared to others.

Sounds like I may have too many zuccini and squash plants for my size.

Here's what I planted today:

3 different kinds of tomatoes
Bell pepper
Jalapeno
Serrano
Eggplant
zuccini
squash
basil
cilantro
rosemary
parsley

If it starts to look too crowded in there I'll have to pull some plants out and put them in a bucket or something.

Thanks!

Last year, my tomatoes just started to ripen around the time of the first frost, done with those. I'm just doing the summer squash this year, hands off and maintenance free with a crop throughout the summer.
