I have no money for custom bowie knife..........and am looking for smtg close......Is buying cold steel trailmaster san mai 3 best option........

many pple on forums have problem with sk5 trailmaster...breaking or loose guard handle etc....any opinions welcome

The Hossoms use N690Co steel, which takes a brilliant edge (think VG-10 with an attitude), are stainless and I have yet to hear of anyone breaking one. Toss in the Spyderco warranty and I think the choice is a 'no brainer'.

As the proud owner of a Hossom Forester, I say go for the Spyderco. Its near custom quality for production prices. I wish I had all the other sizes as well. The Day Hiker is a great looking smaller fixed blade.

love the feel of forester for price.....just am not sure about that steel for hard chopping ....

Honestly the SK5 Trailmasters have held up beautifully. Occasionaly someone will have an issue with the kraton handles. I have seen where one or two different baldes has broken. One was from a flaw and one was due to being beaten through a log when it was sub zero temp. Considering the tens of thousands of knives out there a couple failures isn't bad for a production item.

The hossom forester will be more durable because of it's full tang 0.200'' construction.
The edge will hold up to chopping, since it has a thick convex edge.

the cold steel is 50% thicker in a tougher steel, and a convex edge can be applied after. The big issue is whether or not the handle will need replacing.

I'd go for the TM! Got a SK-5 & SMIII Trailmaster as well as a Spyderco Forager. There is just something about the trailmaster.
Can't go wrong wither either blade!

My wife says go with the Spyderco.

I've got the Spyderco Hossom Forager and both Hossom Retribution folders which are also made of N690 and I've used the HELL out of all of them with no problems at all. In fact, I've used the big Retribution folder like you'd normally use a fixed blade and it works as well today as the day it arrived new in the box. Mr. Hossom knows how to design a great knife and what more need to be said about Spyderco?......I'd use the big Spyderco Hossom and never give it a second thought.

Best of luck!

I just got my second Forester (had to sell my first) but what sucks is my "new" one has a G-Clip instead of the Tek-Lok and the handle screws protrude a little bit which might cause blisters. Any of you aware of these issues? Did the "store" I ordered from rip me off on the belt clip?
