what's so good about emerson knives

Yup, a Emerson is like a 1911. There is a undefinable personality and usability that is in both. Maybe a bit more $$ than the competition but nothing else is close if that's what you want.

It's all marketing: they are overpriced for what you get. All his knives run at least $100.00 more than they are worth in terms of materials and craftsmanship.

They are only overpriced if folks aren't willing to buy them.
Being that Emerson sells a few hundred thousand knives a year, I would say they are priced just right.

Eta: could you by chance share with us what is Emerson's marketing budget?

Lets also not forget that a Emerson knife was specially designed for and used on the Space Shuttle and International Space Station. That's kinda a big deal. I dont think marketing was driving that sale.

No-nonsense blades for people who need a sharp tool.

If you can appreciate the looks, they're for you too! If not, head to the spyderco forum.

I have several decent knives. I have gained an interest in Emersons. I have seen exactly one in person. A Commander. I have a few questions, maybe you guys can help steer me right.

How is the lockup on them?
How robust of a design are they?
Are they serviceable, should wear one to that point?
Warranty?

Thanks for the help guys. I hope to pick one up soon.

On all eleven of mine, they broke-in to 50% and stayed there. Perfect lock-up imo.

Where design strength and ergonomics are concerned, I have yet to see better in a production knife.

Absolutely.

Warranty?

I have experienced very few companies that are a pleasure to deal with - Emerson is one of them. They will look after you better than family. :)

I hope that helps.

APF, thanks for taking the time Sir. I am now about to figure out which will be my next victim. I'm kind of into heavy duty stuff right now, so maybe a commander? Any suggestions are welcome. I like PE blades. Thanks again guys, Josh

I don't know what's the big deal about Emerson knives . But I also said the same thing about Spyderco . I don't really like the looks of them and I don't care for recurve knives . That being said I'm looking into getting one specially a mini 7 I believe thats what is call .

The Commander is a classic 'first Emerson' and a great choice. You may also want to take a good look at a CQC-15, either standard or mini.

The Sevens are a great pattern, in fact, a 7V resides in my pocket as I write this. You might want to see if you can handle an A-100 too. I just love them for a great edc.

Was there a problem on the first go? How was it handled?

Story time:

First one I owned was an Emerson Mini-Commander, black on black, wave ground off. Bought as a user, to be fair, but it still had the issues that none of my other knives had. Specifically a really sticky lock (which apparently goes away after breaking the knife in, mine however stayed), the knife blade had play, and there was a part of the G10 that was very worn (handle screw seemed like it would pop out). Instead of dealing with the warranty (I was new to the knife world around this time), I listed it as a heavy-beat to hell user at a ridiculously low price, full disclosure and all, and got rid of it. After a few months into the knife world and trying/learning new things, I think I'll give them a second shot.

This isn't a rant/complaint against Emerson or anything, as it would be unfair for me to use this case against them (the knife was bought used, after all). I like what he stands for, and I'd like to buy an Emerson in a better condition.

Mystro makes some excellent points that warrant a counter point by an anti-emerson person. EKI are so as then why are they used by some of the worlds most elite units, and by NASA. It was a green berret who first introduced me to Emerson knives when I was in Bananastan.

EKI knives are plain, simple, very efficient knives, without many bells and whistle and a finish that some people may qualify as crude.
But thy deliver an Exacto cut every time, and that what's matter. Plus, 154 CM is stupid simple to sharpen, especially in a chisel grind.
