Whats so Great About a Sebenza

I have been looking at some sebenzas and I think they are great knives but I'm not sure they are worth their gigantic price tag. Convince me otherwise.

DO A SEARCH!!!!
This is the sebenza forum, after all. (oops, I mean CR forum)
There are lots of opinion, just read through the threads.
It's homework time!
.
Also, no one can tell you if it's going to be worth it to you. There are many much more expensive knives that people think are worth it and they buy them EVERY day.

I used to collect knives, from factory to custom, I dont anymore, i sold a bunch and bought a sebenza 2 years ago and never looked back. The fit and finish is perfect; what else is there to know. You want perfection, buy a sebenza; as far as price; it only hurts once . :D

Well, the reason why I saved up and bought my 1st Seb was because I heard so many wonderful things about them, and I was very impressed with the background of the Owner concerning how he started, military record etc, not to mention the blade, handle materials.

But, when I got it, I found out that Sebenza means "work", and that is exactly what I have done with mine.
I'll spare you the details in your thread, but take a look at another thread just posted called "Seb spine sure makes a difference".

I work on everything from making Staffs/ Canes to little wooden flowers and the Seb does me right.

The rounded spine on the seb, has been worth the $$ to me just because I can do more work with it, with less loss of comfort.

Also to me, the way they formed/ ground the S30 V, makes it extremely easy to sharpen.
I don't have the cash to buy a knife that I am not going to use, and I am glad I have a Seb.

1. Use the Search Function. That's what's there for.

2. This topic has been beaten to death enough already hence the search will come in handy.

3. I refuse to answer your question because it has been answered numerous times before.

4. Use the Search Function.

All right I'm convinced. The next time I find $400 in the street I'll get a Sebenza.

Well, I just recently recovered mine, so it's more valuable to me now.

First, the sturdiness of the knife. Try working with a knife that has blade play, or has a shoddy lock-up, and then work with the sebbie. You're basically working with a fixed blade.

Secondly, simplicity of maintenance. Easy to keep clean, the lines are simple, easy to sharpen. If you ever had a knife that was hard to sharpen, or was a dust magnet, or always got caught in your pants, you'll understand why this is important.

Thirdly, it does all kinds of work. Mine have cut really hard plastic, to opening mail. No problems with sharpness, no problems with lock.

Lastly, the elegance of the design. I had a friend who looked at it and said "you know it's expensive because even the thumb lug is so well designed." There's nothing about it that sticks out or seems off. Its elegance lies in its simplicity.

I love my sebbie because it combines both worlds. Sure, you can have your strider folders and they'll work themselves to the bone...but DANG they're ugly.

William Henry knives are extremely beautiful, almost artful...but would you actually use those beautiful knives to open your mail, cut cardboard, cut rope, cut branches, etc.? Safe queen number one right there.

The sebbie is worth that price to me. Combination of sturdiness and elegance all in one. And that's RARE. And that "rare" quality is what makes it all worth it.

You can buy a piece of junk for $20 that will cut stuff.

To tell the time, you can buy a Timex digital for $20 or so, based on the Sunday ad from my local drugstore.

You can buy a rusted out $%!tbox that you can drive to wherever you are going, and it will get you there.

Or, if you have some extra bucks, you can buy a Porsche or Mercedes, and it will also get you there. But the difference in how it gets you there is, to some people, worth the extra money. To other people, who either don't see the difference, or don't care, it isn't worth the extra money.

A decent Rolex will run several thousand dollars. A lot more than a Timex. To some people, the difference is worth the money. To others, it isn't.

All this, of course, assumes that you have a fair amount of extra money available. A Sebbie will cost you a lot less than any of these.

I own all of the things I've described. Because I can. I'm in my 50s, retired, and I did pretty well in life. So now I'm enjoying it. The analogy to Mercedes, Porsche and Rolex sounds overblown and exaggerated. But it isn't. There are far more luxurious things than Mercedes, Porsche and Rolex in the automotive and timekeeping worlds. But once you get to that point, you are talking about jewelry, not functionality.

If you want a taste of what things can be like, and what fine equipment and machinery is like, get a Sebenza (or a Mnandi). You only go around once. And the price of admission is cheap, in relative terms.

On the other hand, if you are content to drive basic transportation, and to wear a Timex to know what time it is, don't buy the Sebenza. You'll be better off, because you won't know what you are missing.

And if you just don't have the money yet - be of good cheer - someday you will.

A Sebenza, in addition to being a really fine knife, is an inexpensive luxury.

the perfection for a folding knife would be a sebbie with a spyderhole, I really hate this damn thumbstud! my finger keeps sliding on it and I need al least 2 or 3 tries to open it... don't laugh :)

(being a Spyderholic doesn't help with thumstuds)

Like you can convince a 14 year old of anything

I have a teenage nephew living with me and Lord Knows he has everything in the whole wide world figured out. Sweep the floor before you mop it? Waste of time. Seperate lights from darks before you wash? Silly. Drill out that screw hole so you don't split the wood? Crazy talk. Unplug the saw before you change the blade? Just plain stupyouchmyfinger!ITHURTSITHURTSITHURTS! stupid saw

It's pretty obvious he has an agenda. Trolls among us brothers.

Of course not. If you put what it does, how it does it and how long it will do it for on a graph with price on the other axis and then plot several knives in several price ranges you will find that you get very little for your money when you buy a knife like a sebenza and you get a helluva a lot for your money , in comparison, when you buy a cheap piece of chinese crap.

If it's your time and energy that's earning your money, spend it the way you want.

I'm planning on buying a sebenza when I can afford it and I move dirt , with a shovel, in the georgia summer heat for my money.

Why? Because I picked up a sebenza at "blade" and the quality and attention to detail was obvious, it is a very nice knife. It has something extra that I find valuable.

But also, it's just money, stupid little pieces of paper that represent the life that slips through my fingers wether I like it or not.

Man that got you guys all rilled up I know that a Sebenza or any CR knife for that matter is worth their high price tag and I hope to one day get a CR knife because they are some of th best production knives you can buy.

And why do you guys keep talking about trolls?

I would take years of threads to show you to explain all that. Stay around here long enough and you will find out about Trolls. Believe me you were presenting yourself as one. The jury is still out though. :p

If sebenzas are enough to get this much response out of all of you I must go look at one in person. I will be going to World of Knives sometime in the next couple of weeks and I will scrutinize every little thing and report back with my opinion. I'm preparing to be impressed.
