I still havent seen whats so great about these knives, their web site is almost impossible to navigate unless you have prior knowledge of how to shop around on it and there home page doesnt have any knife links on it.

BTW, I ask my question because I'm a cold steel/sog knife nut and just wanted to broaden my horizons.

Hello Doom
Welcome to the Rat's Nest, I'm glad that you stopped by.

In short what is so great about Swamp Rat is the extreme performance.

To find some performance pics of Swamp Rat knives check out the following link http://www.swampratknifeworks.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=10;t=002109#000000 (some of the pics are missing, but I think you'll get the idea)

In general Swamp Rat, Busse and Scrapyard make extremely high performance knives, knives that are made to handle what other knives can not. They vary in prices and materials, but one thing that we do not compromise on is performance.

All three are separate companies, but they are all related. Scrapyard is the least expensive, Swamp Rat is in the middle of the pack and Busse is the most expensive.

For additional reviews check out www.swampshack.com and click on reviews

I hope that helps.

In regards to the Website, we barely are able to keep up with demand for our products when it is difficult to find where we sell them, if we update the website and make it easy to navigate we'll never be able to keep up with demand ;)

:D:D

Doombringer, welcome to the addiction! You will never see what's so great about them unless you use one. Take the plunge and get a Swamp Rat of your chosen size and if you are not completely satisfied....you can ALWAYS sell it. I used to own a few CS.....now since finding the Swamp....I don't. You can really test and get a good feeling of performance from the Camp Tramp 7" Blade or a Battle Rat 9" Blade. The Battle Rat is my personal favorite.

I agree with Gravelface on this one. I have a few CS knives that I am getting ready to sell. I do like some of the CS folders, but fixed blades I plan on sticking with the Busse family. My first was a SRKWs RatWeiler I bought about 3 years ago or so... Thing is a beast and indestructable. Since then, I have picked up a muddy RatWeiler, an M6, Tan/Tan Camp Tramp and Bandicoot...

Of course, then the Busse addiction started. Got an Hell Razor and thought that would do it... Man was I wrong...

What size CS blade do you use the most?

Welcome to the Swamp! ........RATS ROCK!!

What's so great about Rats is that they are high performance cutting tools that are practical and affordable. I had similar feelings as you when I first got interested in them. Now that I am for familiar with the way the Busse family shops work the worst thing about these blades is the wait between models releases. They have rabid fans, a true testament to the quality of the blades produced. I agree with the others. Buy a Howling Rat LM (HRLM) now while it's still available. They'll be gone soon and when they are you will have to pay a premium to get one off of the secondary market. At $128 you can't beat it. It is a sweet blade. If you don't like it, someone will likely take it off your hands quickly on the Exchange. Buy it, beat on it!

I'm loving that pack more and more every time I see it! But I've settled a deal on a Monsoon! LeatherRose is gonna skin me!!!

This pack addiction is getting as bad as the knife addiction!!!

What happened to TheDoomBringer? Did y'all scare em off by not flaming him??? Thats what I love about the Busse family, you really have to work hard to even get a cross word out of these guys! :D

Doombringer, thanks for stopping by our little corner of BF. Besides the performance everyone is telling you about, the other reason to buy any knife from the Busse triumvirate is the industry-best warranty coupled with great customer service. On the rare occasion anyone has actually damaged one of these knives, it has been replaced with NO hassles. Examples include shooting a knife (twice!) with a 30.30, beating on one with a pipe wrench for 8 hours, and stabbing one into a cinder block, then kicking it broadside. (on this last one, the owner has so far chosen to hang on to his now shorter knife, but he was offered a replacement)

Another reason you might appreciate is that these rabid knife fans are just good people, and the Busse, SR, and Scrapyard forums are just way more fun than any others. :D BTW, there is more SR activity on their home forum here:

http://www.swampratknifeworks.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum;f=10

And, your right, the web site, as the public face of Swamp Rat, does not leave a good first impression for a prospective customer.

It all started with search for a Camp Tramp for me. I picked up a Bog Dog first, then a Battle Rat, then a Howling Rat, then my Holy Grail, a Camp Tramp. You can find discontinued models in the Exchange section, on eBay, on Knife Forums, and on Jerzee Devil forums. You can also find comparably priced pieces from the Scrapyard. I haven't picked up any Busses, but Swamp Rat fills my needs right now. I'm currently modding my Howling Rat, and will probably mod my Camp Tramp.

I used to feel the same way as the first poster. I always saw people posting pics of their Busse and Swamp Rats and I thought, what the heck are they going on about? I just bought a Swamp Rat Battle Rat and I can say that I am much more impressed than I even dreamed. This is clearly not just a Mall Ninja type knife. This knife is all business. It is pure function and the form follows naturally.

From what I hear about the Busse family, you have great support should you need it and they are not going to go under anytime soon. I have never seen a Busse or a Swamp Rat that didn't go up in value even when used. There are not many things you can say that about. You can buy a new knife, use the heck out of it and then sell it at a profit! Try doing that will a SOG or a Cold Steel. I promise you, you will lose money on those knives.

Maybe some reasons that you can sell them for some much even when used is that if you ever break it, you get a new one, also, most people tend to hold on to them when they buy them so it is somewhat rare to see them for sale. With the Battle Rat at least, you have to hold it to understand. It is a pure tool that was made to function. With many large blades, they are made to look cooler than they work.

DoomBringer: I used to say the same thing you are saying now, "What's so great about Swamp Rats?" Then I bought a few and actually used them. They are an incredible value for the money. Their rat trap is my EDC, and my Howling Fat and Busse Game Warden see plenty of use also. - Go ahead and order one. If you don't like it you can always re-sell it as they also hold their value extremely well. - Just my .02 cents.

start buying busses and swamp rats , and you`ll see cold steal and sog for what they really are

I am more of a Scrapyard guy because I love the Res C handles and my first Busse family blade was a SS4 and it totally surpassed my expectations.
I missed out on the S6 and ended up getting a deal on a M6. At first I did not like the micarta handle but it has grown on me and now it is one of my favorite knives. For simple designs they are incredibly well thought out. You can hold the M6 handle far back for chopping or far forward on the choil for control.

One of the problems with Scrappers and Rats is they look nearly as good in pics on the net as they do in person. It is like how a picture of a real Ferrari and a kit car look the same when in person there is no comparison. That feeling of quality that does not come through on the pics is so obvious in person.

The fact that you have to want to buy one and the company does not have to advertise should be a clue as to why they are worthwhile rather than scaring you away. The resale prices being higher than new prices is another clue as to there being something special.

Hmmmm. I wonder how many Cold Steel/SOG knives could put up with this:

or this:

for $139.95.

PS: Welcome to the Busse Family Forums, DoomBringer. :)

My wife has an original HR and CT. She loves the handles, loves the balance, loves the edge. We had Leatherman make custom sheaths for both and she carries and uses both on a regular basis. They are definitely durable blades to still be in such great shape after the way she has put them to work.

You dont want to get her defending her Swamp Rats, she gets downright hormonal about it!
