What's special about the Hi-Jinx

I'm trying to satisfy my curiosity and figure out what's so special about the CRKT Hi-Jinx. On paper, I don't see anything particularly special or appealing about it. The materials are good, and I would have expected it to go in the 200-250 range. However I was dumbfounded to discover the MSRP of $500. Does anyone know what in particular about it causes it to command such a premium? I can see that the titanium on the non-lock side has more machining than most, but that does not bump costs by hundreds.

On paper, I would take a Sebenza any day, but I haven't actually handled it so I was hoping to get input from people that have.

I see that it won the knife of the year award so clearly it can't be a bad knife, I'm just wondering if its just something I have to see in person?

I agree it should be in the 200-250 range. Some people got them for 299 which isn't horrible but the 399 price is ridiculous. That's more than the 0801cf, 0777m390, 0600 were.

I'll admit that I have a problem paying that kind of money for a CRKT, no matter what materials are used or how impeccable the F&F is. I'd just rather have a nice ZT, Spyderco, CRK, or put the money towards a nice custom.

I don't know, Scurvy. You and I sure have been doing a lot of agreeing with each other recently. What's this world coming to? :D

IMO, a Hi Jinx versus a Large Sebenza (let alone any of the other knives you mentioned) is a no brainer. Moving right along . . .

At 399.00 You know what they say, There's one born every minute.

As someone mentioned in another thread, among Lionsteel, CRKT and Ken Onion, there are a lot of mouths to feed.
Very true. We'll see if they sell out quickly. If they do, you'll know the price wasn't too high. Then again, today's market is absolutely crazy compared to what it was a few years ago.

Well if you notice, the price didn't jump to $399 until after it won awards at Blade. At $399 I think it's too high. At $299 it wasn't a bargain but also wasn't out of line either. It's also a limited production right? Maybe that influenced the price a little.

I don't really get it either. I held one at blade and really wasn't impressed. It was heavy and didn't flip very well. The blade is cluttered with excessive branding and the pocket clip is the run of the mill stamped flat piece of metal. The scalloped handles aren't particularly my cup of tea, but that's just my tastes. The CRKT name doesn't do it any favors either. I know there are other high dollar knives with similar attributes but, they don't normally have so many of them.

And yet somehow it managed to win the Overall Knife of the Year Award at the 2014 Blade Show. Given some of the fit and finish issues that have been going on with the Hi Jinx since it's been released, it doesn't speak very highly for the folks who voted for it, does it?

It's high priced at $400 even for Lionsteel. Lionsteel knives are gorgeous brutes with impeccable build quality.

The whole process of voting for any of the awards seems like some big secret or something. I couldn't even tell you who voted for it or even really who all the nominees were (if there is even a nomination process) and I was there looking at the knives in person.

Which brings up the question of who built the Hi Jinx . . . Lionsteel or CRKT? If you're right about Lionsteel's build quality, it had to be CRKT because according to what I'm hearing, the build quality of the Hi Jinx isn't "impeccable".

IIRC, Blade Magazine staff vote for two awards, one of which is the Overall Knife of the Year. I'll double check that and get back to you.

Lionsteel built the HiJinx, Onion designed it and CRKT marketed it.
Hmmmm. Lionsteel build quality is not altogether impeccable then . . . at least not according to reports of some folks who have posted here.

I have to say that "impeccable" is a tough word to live up to. I reserve the use of that word for knife makers and manufacturers whose reputation has earned it. (FYI, only two production manufacturers have found a permanent home at the top of my "impeccable" list . . . William Henry and Chris Reeve.)

I had read something to that effect here, but haven't seen it published anywhere by BLADE. Please share where you get your info from as well.
