What's that you're eating?

Forgot to get a finished picture but this steak turned out great. Also did cheddar stuffed bacon wrapped jalapeños.

I eat ramen when I'm lazy and don't want to cook. Just boil it and add a few things to make a meal out of it but . . .

Who knew there was a shrimp ramen shortage? 🤔

I've been looking for shrimp flavored ramen at my local discount supermarket for months. Not there. They've got chicken & beef but no shrimp.

Shrimp is my favorite flavor because it provides a more neutral flavor than chicken or beef. Pork flavor would work too but I seldom saw any even when there wasn't a shortage.

So, I bought a case of Maruchan shrimp ramen (24 packs) via Amazon 6 weeks ago for $8.73 delivered for free to an Amazon locker. That's just 36 cents/pack but I can still remember when I could buy ramen for less than $5/case (or about 20 cents/pack) not that long ago and even less b4 that.

Must really have been in the mood for ramen this month because I'm already running out. Looked on Amazon again. Maruchan and Top Ramen are now selling for about $19/case!

That's an over 100% increase in price in just a month and 1/2. It's still "cheap" enough, so, I bought a case of Top Ramen this time because it was being "fulfilled" by Amazon and could again be deliverd free to an Amazon locker.

But, this price increase (way beyond the reported level of inflation) got me wondering.

So, I just did a little research and found the following article which blames a variety of factors including the war in Ukraine and wheat shortages in China and increasing demand in Asia for ramen due to the shortages causing availability to drop and prices to rise in the US (and elsewhere).

I found other articles on the topic as well but I found this one most interesting/informative. See: Ramen Noodle Prices Heat Up

Nothing's simple anymore . . .

PS: Just stopped by a 99Ranch store today and saw this for sale for $1.09/pack or $26/case of 24 -- 23% more than the ramen that I juse bought from Amazon.

That's crazy, but the wheat shortage thing is not surprising.

During Covid when we weren't going out to eat, the Better Half and I nerded out on figuring out how to make good ramen at home, with quality noodles, making our own broth, etc. We even learned how to make Ajitama eggs, which really aren't that hard and are delicious, even if you're just adding them to a ramen packet.

This book was a great help, and for many of the recipes it gives you the simple way, and then the more traditional, time-intensive way, to do a lot of things. Figuring out some of these tricks took our ramen to the next level.

Wow. Interesting. I used to virtually live on ramen when I first entered the workforce twenty years ago. They were $.10c /ea back then. Are there other brands that are tasty/available/cheap? I haven’t tried one in years. So many shortages these days but I’m not surprised. Global population has literally doubled since I was born. There are 8B people vying for resources now.

I've noticed the same re Ramen packets. I used to find a 4-pack of the Nongshim brand Shin Black Ramen (my favorite) for nearly $4. Now the same 4-pack costs $8. It's still a bargain since one pack supplemented with an egg, a dollop of miso paste, a handful of veggies, chiles and some frozen shrimp makes for an easy meal.

The 99 Ranch Asian grocer in town has an entire aisle of noodle soup packets and I like to try out a new variety each time I go. I'm livid because I found an abalone flavored vermicelli soup packet that was positively delicious and surprisingly filling. Of course they've been sold out every time I've been back and now it's all I crave.

Last night I cooked a few big pork steaks seasoned with Bone Suckin Sauce bbq rub, some with Jack Millers BBQ sauce some dry. Fresh mustard greens out the garden, first picking this fall. I forgot the dang cornbread when I took this quick pic, but it’s 2 Jiffy boxes a can of cream corn and a bunch of diced Rajin Cajun candied jalapeños.
