What's the best combat folder?

Gerber Applegate. This is the larger size, but I dont know if they ever got the lock worked out right. If you dont find a good one of these, the go with the Gerber Applegate Covert.

This recomandation is based on your $100 request.

Second for me would be the Spyderco Massad Ayoob, or a Spyderco JD Smith. Both are around 4", and are tactical folders.

The best combat folder?
It’s easy – Kalashnikow assault rifle with folding stock! The make and model is pretty subjective matter, I personally would prefer Russian made AK-74 in 5,45x39 mm for regular combat and AKSU-74 (the shortened version, SMG size) for close combat situations. Probably backed up with Glock 19 in 9 mm, but it doesn’t fold...

Sorry Folks, couldn’t resist.
If seriously – don’t mess terminology, please! Messing terminology more than likely you couldn’t distinguish your right hand from your left one at pretty short time. Saying combat folder in knife context you should have in your mind the folding knife what is specially designed for blade to blade dueling, dedicated for this purposes or at least – for hand-to-hand combat. So the answer is pretty easy and natural – no one folding knife is any good for these applications. All you could hear about such knives from makers, manufacturers or another knife users is merely feeding a line.
Even exaggerated medieval Spain navajas with 10-inched blades plus 12-15-inched handles were only a poor substitute for real swords called more to threaten showing that you are armed than for fight, especially against real sword. There are no “combat folders” at all.

If you are going to use your knife for self-defense applications occasionally, if situation forces, each strong, heavy-duty folder with lockable blade and handle what provides secure grip would be equally good, or equally bad, depends on point of view. There are plenty of such knifes around, usually they are called tactical folders what is also not too accurate name but it is common. Such knives are primarily the tools as each other knife, especially folding one. Calling them combat you are messing their primarily purpose. Of course this no way should mean that occasionally they couldn’t be used as self-defense tools...

Please remember – first was the Word, so don’t deprive it of sense!

It seems to me that if you're looking for the best "combat/self-defense" folder, it would be the one that you know how to use most effectively, i.e. one that you have training with. The biggest, baddest folder won't do you a lick of good if you don't know how to effectively use it. To that end, I'd say the Spyderco Gunting might be what you're looking for, along with some instruction. Maybe a Karambit.

Just my .02

By "combat folder", do you mean a dedicated fighting folder, or a folder a soldier might take into combat? I think the two roles have some similar requirements, but some differing ones.

I believe the Benchmade Axis AFCK is the finest production fighter available at any price. Super sharp tip for piercing, forward rake for good slashing, opening hole is the best opening mechanism for many people, incredibly reliable and strong axis lock, and a handle that is secure and works so well ergonomically that it actually enhances the cutting ability of the blade.

Overall, my advice would be: 1. avoid liner locks, period. 2. Handle the knives yourself to make sure the handles work well with your hand, in whatever grip(s) you favor. 3. Make sure the knife is carryable for you -- not so big or heavy that you'd leave it at home.

I AGREE 100%! 806D2 there is no better!
