If you had $70 to spend on a pocket knife what would you buy. Also would it be a tactical or traditional pocket knife, model, maker etc. ??? and why you think so. Either is fine for me. I wear jeans everyday and boots and work both outside and inside as a livestock nutritionist in Texas.
Thanks

Well there isnt really a definite answer to what the "best" knife would be. it all depends on what ur going to use it for. i carry the full sized benchmade griptillian and find it able to tackle all the tasks i ask of it! there arre many good knives in ur price range. Benchmades, kershaw, spyderco, etc...

Ontario RAT 1.

It goes for 25-35 on ebay, even less if you order the serrated model.

It is the toughest folding knife I have encountered, and costs an extremely low price for what you get. The steel is AUS-8.

I would pay 70 for one if they had a version with better steel.

The first thing that comes to mind in that price range is the Kershaw JYD II with composite blade. It has great ergo's good blade steel and its action is extremely smooth. It has been the most impressive knife I have purchased in its class. The only think I don't like is the clip, it functions well but its ugly and I would rather have it tip up but that's more of a personal preference. What knives have you looked at so far?

Actually I have over 120 knives ,benchmade pika, many camillus/ontario robo assist, spyderco native and delica, kershaws, timberlines, gerbers spring assist, traditional new henckels, camillus, primble, and many vintage (excellent condition) schrades, camillus, im. ivory frontiers, its like I am hoarding knives but I sell a few around work and then buy more. Im not stout when it comes to money so I have to work in that price range. I even keep a few rough rider trappers around for the guys at work. I always have a hard time figuring out which one I am going to carry myself and just wondered what you all thought was the best. Thanks for all your imput and responding to my question. I hope I even get more responses.

Well that was my budget when I went to replace my previous EDC (Kershaw Chive that I gave to my girlfriend). I went with the Benchmade Griptillian. A month later now and I couldn't be happier. I got the 550HG because I like thumb holes.

ALL my pocketknives were under $70.

Personally, if I were in your position, I'd get a Case chestnut bone trapper with CV/carbon steel. But then again, I'm a folksy, old school kind of guy.

I find that I use three blade stock knives the most, especially if I'm doing yard work. The choice of three blades is convenient, the sheep foot blade is great for opening plastic sacks of mulch or fertilizer.

So for traditional I can recommend a Queen Cattle King in D2 and Amber Bone or a Case large stockman in Bonestag. Both are under $70.

But I also just recommended this knife in another thread.... I got a Tyrade in G10 last week, it's a little more than $70 but I can't believe how much knife it is for the price.

I like both traditional and modern :)

I would stretch the budget just slightly (about $10) and then consider either the G10 Tyrade pictured above or the Spyderco Manix 2.

The Manix has the all goodness of the Griptilian everyone talks about above but adds a better feeling G10 handle, stouter construction, and slimmer profile in the pocket. The Kershaw is an assisted opener and has a great blade to handle ratio. If you like around 3" blades go Manix, if you like around 4" blades go Tyrade.

Both these knives are US made with premium US steel blades, something that can't be said for most knives in the price range, especially the Spyderco's around $80.

Here's a recent thread with more info on these knives:

2 come to mind right off the top of my head - Spyderco Tenacious and Buck Vantage Pro.

The Tenacious is an awesome deal. For $30 you get decent steel, G-10 scales, 4-position clip, phosphor bronze bushings for smooth/fast opening, stainless steel liners w/ solid liner lock and the fit and finish of substantially more expensive knives.

The Buck Vantage Pro for $46-48 is also a hell of a deal. Maybe even more so. You get S30V blade steel, 3-D machined G-10 scales over stainless steel liners w/ a strong liner lock and one of the best deep-carry clip designs around. It also has great fit and finish and smooth action.

These 2 are my picks for "high-value" or "bang-for-your-buck" knives.

Buck 110 Folding Hunter
Victorinox Soldier

These two knives have been at the top of the "best value" charts for a long time and with good reason. I have several examples of each and all have served well over the years.

With the Buck on your belt and the Soldier in your pocket, you're equipped for any reasonable knife related task without spending your entire budget.

dan :)
