What's the best multi tool?

I like my SOG multi tool, one handed opening(for the pliers that is), and compound leverage!! Blade steel sucks, but hey it's a freaken multitool. Made to do a lot of different things, not made to do one thing perfectly...

Skcusloa,

Many folks here say that the best multi-tool is the one you have with you when you need it.

IMHO, get a Victorinox SwissTool X if you don't mind the bulk and weight. But since you put a decent/premium knife blade as a requirement, you can also go for the Leatherman Charge Ti. I have both, and can surmise that both of them have their own strengths and weaknesses, but given the circumstances for which I use a multi-tool for, I always find myself reaching for the Vic STX. One advantage of the LM Charge is that it is pocketable because of its compact size and removable pocket clip! =)

My own multitool is the Leatherman Supertool 200. It's the second-biggest tool they make. When choosing, I looked at the different tools available in various multis and based my decision on that factor. The Supertool 200 has what I needed and wanted.

I got into a "situation" on a beach and all I had was a Chinese wanna be multi. It cut some netting wrapped around a stranded sea gull, but I would have felt cooler with a nicer tool

I've been carrying a Surge for about two weeks now.

I like it, but not quite as much as my PowerLock. I'm sure it will grow on me, and it has done everything I needed it to do so far. I even used the Surge to break off a bolt (1/4-20, using the pliers) and it didn't even wimper.

One thing I don't like is the sheath. I also carry a Surefire L-4, and it wouldn't fit into the elastic on the original sheath. I'm using a Supertool 200 sheath, that has a flashlight loop on it, and it is working out well. I'm currently designing a leather sheath that will fit the Surge, the extra blade carrier, and a toolbit set, with the loop on the side for my light. I have made leather sheaths for all of my other multitools, and each have the side loop for my light. Makes it a more compact package than using a double nylon type sheath.

I broke a chinese made "wanna-be" multi-tool torqueing it on a hex nut (only tool available so I tried, what the heck right?). Gave me an excuse to buy the Charge XTI and have been very impressed. Built like a tank and definitely built to be used hard. Love the bit kit ... bought the additional kit and have been good to go since. Pliers are stiff to open and close ... little graphite ought to remedy that. And the steel on the blades, man-o-man-o-man, Yowsers what nice steel!

I also have the SOG paratool, another spectacular find. Use it on smaller projects but mostly for the outdoors, excellent steel on the blades ... My wife and I both carry one when we bowhunt together for big game here in the Rockies. Couple years back my wife had to cut me out of some barb wire I got tangled in on a short fall on a nasty slope and she did it with the Paratools serrated (didn't have the strength to cut it with the wire cutters). A great back up for your main hunting blade and having the wood/bone saw in the mix, man, zips the pelvic bone double quick like!

The SAK's ... I have no use for them; have a vintage Mauser SAK which is very nice looking and has great functions but god help you if you need to cut up more that one box! Seems to be a similar problem from knife to knife, blades are garbage and not intended for hard use. Easy to sharpen, easier to dull ....

IMO ... :D

Back from the depths...

If you could just put a Pocketclip on a Victorinox Swisstool or Spirit, THAT would be the Ultimate Multi for me!
