What's the best ratan?

If you don't mind splinters, you must have the condition known as "Kali-Calluses" otherwise known as rough hands from using sticks all the time. :)

:jerkit: can be uncomfortable at times:D

Similar to your question, I'm not sure of is the real significance of higher numbers of nodes. Does this imply slower growth and more density? Aesthetically, I like more nodes because it does look interesting.

My instructor told me just that. The more nodes and the closer they are together the denser the structure of the rattan.

Does anybody know anything about conditioning your sticks? I have heard about slowly dripping Tung oil onto one end of the stick and letting it slowly seep through. Any body else heard anything like this?

I always assumed more close nodes meant more density. I think you are right, I just never really saw it in writing.

I think tung oil could be a good idea. The only drawback I would think could be petroleum distillates. Some think they cause health issues, and contain carcinogens. They are found in many, many products.

PTKstockton might be on to something with the dripping wax idea. Paraffin wax (another petroleum product) is found in wax paper, something that touches food. I think it might be safe. There is wax made from soy which seems like it would be really safe.

I don't claim to know about such things scientifically. I just think about a chemical touching your skin while you sweat for long periods of time.

Rattan being a fibrous wood does soak up oil and tung oil will cause the sticks to harden. You can also use other substances, the K.I.L. sticks are soaked in order to enhance their durability :D

The nodes are the strongest and densest part of the stick. More nodes are normally considered better (it also IMO hurts a whole lot more)
