What's the Best SAK for Me?

A bit big, but I'd go with a Swisstool. Covers all the bases you might need covered out in the woods. Built like a tank, reliable, and convenient. The Scout's motto is "Be prepared". Swisstool gets you prepared, and then some. Plus multitool although bigger, seem to be more PC, sheeple friendly, and descrete then knives. People look at them and don;t think anything of it. Try the Swisstool.

when i was in boy scouts i had a swisschamp and i was young and it didnt bother me having it in my front pockets that i wore kind of loose big pocket pants or when i wore my scout pants i had a nylon sheath and it served me well! always good to have to many tools than not enough i even used the fish scaler when we caught fish at camp and cleaned them to eat so theres things on there that will serve you some use than not having them and wishing you did out in the woods!

A SwissTool X. It's heavy but it's a great choice and you will find it useful long after you are done with your summer work program.

This thread illustrates one of the problems with SAKs: There are almost too many models to choose from. And everyone has their own favorite. But the good thing is that it is hard to go wrong with them. They are all good.

The main thing I have learned after owning and using various models over several decades is that when buying, the ones with more tools seem more attractive, whereas when carrying, the ones with fewer tools ride along more easily and more often. But that's just me.

I have 50-ish Vics kicking around but the one i carried the most would be the Huntsman.
If you don't need scissors get an Alox Farmer.
If you need scissors but don't need a saw buy a 2 layer Vic Compact.
If you don't mind more than 4 layers then get a Swisschamp.
If you don't need overbuilt pliers then the Swisschamp may be all the multitool you'll ever need.
I still think it has the best utility-to-weight ratio of any of the multis.

I like the Soldier, Adventurer, and the Tinker the best. They are the only SAK's I will ever need, but I would like to get another Wenger SI some time.

I have spent a LOT of time on the quest for the perfect Swiss Army Knife for me. I would suggest that you check out the Farmer, Electrician Plus, Explorer and Trekker (You already have good one hand opening folders). The vintage Champion is a little smaller than the Swisschamp but still gives you must of the tools. Farmers can be had for less than $20 new online lots of places. Felinevet is an excellant source for lightly used Victorinox and Wenger knives. http://felinevet.sosakonline.com/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=1

If you aren't worried about phillips screws or opening cans, the Electrician Plus with a clip is a very handy knife. This one rides in my Fatboy every day of the world.

I couldn't find exactly what I wanted, so I had Scibeer (aka Bill Evans ) to build me up a few customs.

Originally I thought that a One Hand Trekker with scissors and a corkscrew would be perfect. It gets to be a bit of a chunk to sit on all day long at a desk, and I don't want to wear a pouch on my belt, so it doesn't get carried much on a daily basis anymore.

Then I decided that was too big, and had him make me a 84mm Drunken Lumberjack.

Then I decided that I really wanted a metal file, scissors and inline screwdriver, so I had him build me an Abrasive Yo-Man. I carry this knife everyday in my pocket. It is perfect for what I do.

I also had him make me a Farmer with a small blade and scissors instead of a saw. I like it, but find that I don't carry it as much as I had thought that I would. It isn't that much smaller than the Ab-YoMan to be worth giving up the extra tools.

I him build a custom Farmer for a friend of mine with a small blade instead of the awl and a pocket clip.

Revolvergeek sweet collection!
I am still lusting after your Scibeer OH Trekker!
:)
I got an Outrider in a trade recently which has the same tools as your OHT mod.
For me I don't find it too thick so i may have to mod or acquire a OH Trekker like yours.

I was thinking of a mod of a Vic Compact as well, with an added saw layer.
Basically 99% of the tools of a Hunstman in a 3 layer package.

It would be even nicer in 84mm frame size but 84mm scissors are hard to find.

I bought some supplies from Rotokid late last year but i haven't used them yet, i guess i better get modding!

not strictly a SAK but for you I suggest a swisstool. I have one and I love it. It has every tool you will ever need. Also through all the use and abuse it has never failed me.

Yeah I'm not sure about the new ones. I've had this for probably.....wow I guess almost 8 years or more. It works great. Between my Delica and this thing I've got most of my bases covered. For everything else, i carry a Leatherman Wave in the car.

"Be prepared"

That's the Scout motto, right?

So I guess it just makes sense to carry a SAK that has lots of different tools so that you can be prepared for more situations and tasks, right?

The SwissChamp certainly offers plenty of tools....but maybe it's just a little too large.
If so, then how about a CyberTool....

It's got all the tools I use from day to day, and the bit driver is really great since it offers eight different driver tips.
And the scissors and pliers are handy too.

It is missing the woodsaw, but I hardly ever used the woodsaw on my other SAKs.

When I carry mine, I put it in a Gerber pouch that came with my Gerber Compact Sport....

Good luck,

Hi,

Like Abacus, I'd second the Vic Huntsman for a EDC knife-based MT. I'mon m third after 41 years of that one.

If you are talking pliers-based, MT's, the sky is the limit. I'd suggest trying the Leatherman Blast to start with and then growing your opinion from there. Never fear - there is no one answer and you'll have fun!!!!!!

Cheers - Joe
