What's the best stainless steel survival knife under $50

Well even the Ka-bar retails for more than $50.00 but I suggest you find Ontario knife co. website and see if they make something close out of a Stainless Steel to your liking.

If you're truly looking for a tough 'survival' knife have you considered a coated blade with a higher carbon content?

I have a SOG Seal Pup Elite (plain edge) that you can find easily for $50. I bought it on a whim because it was so cheap and you know what, it is a GREAT little blade. 4 inches, great handle, great blade profile, great sheath, and SOG really does a good heat treat on the AUS-8 steel. Unless you completely abuse your knife and baton it through bricks it will serve you well.

Have fun.

Cold Steel Survival Edge, hands down. I love the way it cuts, how easy to sharpen it is, everything about it.

Most Ontario fixed blade knives(including all of their "Military/Survival" line, which the Ka-bar short version would be a part of) are 5160 or 1095, not stainless.

What are you trying to survive? In the wilderness; a Mora maybe make a new sheath. If you need a bigger knife you need a small axe instead.

Not a chopper, but my mora 2000 impressed me a great deal, it's profile lends itself useful for a wide array of tasks, and while it's 12C27, that is deemed nothing special by many, I'm impressed with the edge quality. Also the Buck Reaper is stanless and quality if you desire a full tang.

Mora is $38 but with 1 year warranty. Spend $9 more and you get a sog with thicker, nicer blade, better steel and better sheath with life time warranty. I think I would choose seal pup elite.

If funds are tight the mora utility knives can be had for under 10 bucks to my knowledge. They will cut stuff just fine and that other money can be put towards stuff that actually keeps you alive. A case can be made for having a cheaper knife, an extra layer of clothes and some extra food Instead of an expensive knife.

Mora #511 and #514 are both solid, simple, reliable knives for under $10. The Companion MG Stainless is a nice step up, better grip, heftier blade, and I think Ragweed sells it for $12.

Why? You never said what you meant by "survival." If, by "survival" you mean "doing stuff outdoors"....I think the Mora wins hands down over a Seal Pup. It's thinner blade is designed for doing things in the woods.

Though a Vic Alox Farmer is stainless, under 50, and is better for the woods than either, in my opinion.

Agreed. My sog seal pup was pretty useless. Mora knives do a much better job on wood. And yeah swiss army knives are great for general use.
