Whats the best way to sharpen a knife?

Sharpening knives is like getting to Carnegie Hall.
Practice! Practice! Practice!
You will make errors and you will learn from then.
Invest in some Band Aids, also.

DMT diamond stones! I figured I would learn to sharpen my blades the old fashioned way before I went with a guided system, anyone can get a sharp edge with a system but it takes time and effort to get one with stones! I am always trying to get better, I am no expert by any means!

If you don't want to go free hand there are 3~4 choices.
DMT aligner, Lansky, Gatco, Edge PRO (expensive one) If you are going to get a lansky make sure to get the deluxe diamond set.
If you want free hand and can shed out the $
Get a set of DMT diamond stones or if you want you can get 1 fine and 1 EEf to maintain edges.
If all you want is to maintain.
Get a sharpmaker.... A strop and/or a GOOD Chef's steel.

You need to add more detail to your OP.
