HK who has their knives made by BM... You don't mention who makes the product for you because its YOUR brand.

The HK is well promoted as a BM product, they are in the BM catalog and listed on the BM website.

The Bradley was heavily promoted as a Sebenza alternative when it first came out, riding their coattails is a nice way of putting it. I just wonder why they are more expensive than other Benchmade products using the same materials and construction and produced in the same plant. Riddle me that.

Because they can sell there, same reasoning behind the price of most knives. It was promoted as a Sebenza replacement and thus aimed at a different market than an AFCK or Skirmish.

Okay, so forget the HK product line. There's still the countless numbers of knives produced for different companies by Camillus, Queen, etc.

Why are they more expensive? I can think of two possible reasons:

1. Because the price of the piece is set by Bradley. They are their OWN BRAND. So the knives are made by BM. They're not a BM BRAND product. My guess is that one reason for their expense in this line is that they are passing off the cost of sub-contracting to BM to the customer to maximize their profits.

2. Because in a lot of people's minds cost = quality. If you advertise a product as an alternative to a pricey item, and don't have a price that denotes quality, you're not going to sell it as well.

I'd imagine my first reason is the most plausible, however have you considered how well the crap cutlery on the Home Shopping Network sells? What do they do? They offer a big, shiny piece of metal (and some of them look okay they just won't cut butter), then tell you its a "custom" piece or a "limited edition." They tell you that the MSRP is something absurd like $400.00, but because of their "awesome buying power" they're able to offer you these beautiful "custom" pieces at only $125.00. In the mind of the consumer for these products, they're getting a substantial deal. MSRP is a, mostly made-up, guideline. It is what the producer hopes it will sell at. Its not street prices.

In short: Its more expensive than other BMs because you're NOT BUYING A BM AND SINCE IT'S THEIR OWN BRAND THEY CAN CHARGE WHATEVER THEY WANT TO.

No need to shout, this is simple civil discourse we are having here.

But the simple fact remains is you really are buying a Benchmade, no matter who sells or markets the knife. You can call a piece of chicken a steak but it still isn't beef.

Sorry about the shouting.

Anyway, that may be true, but it doesn't affect economics. Mooremaker's are made by Queen (the high end ones). They go for ~$100.00 a pop. Why is it that nobody cracks on MM knives for selling what is basically a camillus or Queen- which under its own name people would seriously baulk at those prices. I mean, name camillus knives go for sub-$20, and unless its a special edition Queens are sub-$50. It doesn't change reality; that being that it is their own brand. The general population isn't going to know that Bradley Alias knives are made by BM; and most people don't care if the Alias is what they really want. Same thing with the MM's.

I think the degree of upset that this knife garners is just because nobody likes being reminded they spent $300.00 on a knife, only to have another knife come out and say "well, if you liked 'X' but are tired of having to wait for it and pay a lot of money for it, you'll LOVE 'Y!'" Thus, you get a lot of pointing (i.e. YEAH, but its really a Benchmade, and it doesn't have a Bushing!!!), and name-calling (i.e. THIEF).

... Silly, really. I mean its someone else's money, why do you care? More Sebenzas for you to buy then. I think taking a crap on someone else's choice of knife (not speaking of true rip-offs here) is really sad. Besides, the Alias didn't rip off the Sebenza, and there are MUCH worse examples of knives being ripped off elsewhere.

BINGO!

And, sweet jeez, it's a thumb stud, not a nuclear reactor. When I reach in my pocket, pull the knife out and open it, it opens ... w/out hurting my wittle thumb. What do I really care if it's blue or if the stippling or serrations are in the exact right place relative to some other guy's ideal?

I hope no one ever tells some of the Sebbie boys that these expensive little gizmos we're talking about are all ultimately just pocket knives ... they won't make you smarter or better lookin' or your thingie bigger.
