What's the deal with a tie-wrap on a Spyderco?

What purpose does the tie-wrap serve? I've seen just a few people put a tie wrap on the thumb hole of their spyderco and I can only guess it acts as some sort of thumb stud. But to me it looks using a rubber band for a lanyard on your sebenza ;) :poop:

You have probably seen ONE person who does that, but just multiple pictures of it from that one poster. I think it is some sort of improvised wave feature so that it grabs on your pocket and opens the knife for you when you pull it out. Looks silly and trashy to me, but what I think shouldn't make any difference to other people. They can do whatever they want to their pocket knives. It has no effect on me, and my opinion has no effect on them.

A zip tie is better then the new fad of putting a nut and bolt through the Spyderhole....oh wait, no it’s not :oops::thumbsdown:

Some of the things I see people do amaze me. If you want a wave just buy the waved version of that knife

I had a brown FRN matriarch (no liners) that I zip-tied for waving. Yeah, it looks cheap, but I tend to look cheap myself...so...

It worked excellently.

I'd never zip tie a hex nut onto a knife though.....seems a bit much.

But if it works, its better than not, I guess.

Zip Tie waves are awesome dude. And while it does cheapen the look of the knife in terms of using it for practical application in self defense or just fast one hand opening it works great.

Ideally every single knife would be equipped with an unintrusive removable wave, like the peg on the Spydie Pikal.

That rod is genius! I can beleive it hasnt been used elsewhere

Edit: No homo.

It keeps anyone from stealing your knife. It is so ugly and repulsive that even thieves are creeped out and they run away.
:) IMO

Honestly I find that as long as you don't leave sharp corners the zip ties don't kill the pockets too bad. The post on the Pikal seems very easy on pockets.

It's a wave for a Spyderco... and they break off after a while, so not that great of a mod.

Are you willing to sell that rubber band lanyard? OR is that a fob? ;)

Yeah I know right :D Post this mess to one of those Instagram things where they play major barbie with their knife  it's not like I don't sometimes...put a new lanyard on my inkosi tonight for the fun of it, but lately I find putting weird trinkets and or office supplies on a knife just gets in the way

Little history on this post... I was screwing around at the desk in our room and put this on my Sebenza. Then I showed my girlfriend and we were giggling because it worked for pretty much all the reasons I said a lanyard was NECESSARY :p just not very durable  It reminded me of the spydercos with tie wraps in that it still had some sort of justifiable purpose just ugly, and you know it's probably gonna break at some point. It was also super hilarious drawing it from the pocket when I was like "hey babe check out my new lanyard" because she is sick of hearing that after the 2 month lanyard binge I just came off of.

With both production and custom knives readily available with the wave feature and priced to meet almost any budget, using a cable tie to mimic it on a regular Spyderco makes almost as much sense to me as cutting away the trigger guard on a defensive handgun to speed the draw. Sure, I concede it works, but it seems if you're halfway serious about this mode of carry and deployment and not just trying it out on a lark, you'd at least scrounge the bucks for a Kershaw Emerson ($17) or a waved Spyderco Delica ($75).

There are many knives beyond Spydercos which get the zip tie treatment. Really all sorts of knives with a tnhhmb hole canget zip tied. In my experience none of these zip ties have ever broken. Just think of it like a hat for your knife.

I agree it is ugly but disagree it is stupid. If it's stupid for you that's fine too, more zip ties for me.

I have a zip tie on a couple of my knives but I don’t use it as a makeshift ‘Wave’ feature. I have a bad shoulder and when it’s acting up, my right arm is almost useless. I’m not very ambidextrious so it makes it easier to open with my left hand.
