I take it they are two different companies, but why the common knife types and names? Is an Ontario RAT 3 the same as a ESEE RAT 3? Do the blades get the same heat treat?

I grabbed this from their site. it should help explain a little for you. IMO - You will never go wrong or be disappionted with one of their knives, and the customer service and knowledge is at the top of their field.

The following knives and gear are manufactured by ESEE Knives (Formerly RAT Cutlery Company): RC-3, RC-4, RC-5, RC-6, Izula, HEST, ESEE Junglas, ESEE Lite Machete, ESEE Fire Kit, and RAT Pack survival sheath. All ESEE (Formerly RAT Cutlery) knives are manufactured by Rowen Manufacturing in Idaho Falls, Idaho.

Please note that ESEE Knives (Formerly RAT Cutlery Company) does not manufacture, sell or guarantee any knife that bears the following name: RAT-3, RAT-5, RAT-7, TAK, RTAK and Model 1 (folder). These knives were designed by Randall's Adventure and Training® (RAT) but are manufactured by Ontario Knife Company (Not RAT Cutlery Company or ESEE Knives). For all sales, info and/or warranty claims for Ontario RAT knives, please contact Ontario Knife Company directly. See our history page for more information.

Thanks. Guess I was thinking that the ESEE RC3 was called a RAT 3 also. Question answered.

fit and finish and warentee much better on esee

Handle length is also slightly longer on the ESEE RC-3. Heat treat is different as well, ESEE has a video on their website somewhere demonstrating the HT Rowen does for them.

And it would be easy to think that. The two knives will fit the sheath, and if one did not very closely inspect each, or know the history, they could easily be mistaken for each other.

And don't worry 'bout us, we can get a bit crusty, we have read the same questions over and over, and seen the same discussions more than 5 times, but that does not mean that you should not ask, just that we can get a bit fatigued...

Also, there has been some drama between some of the different parties involved in your question, so that adds to the fun... :D

Thanks for the question, and let us know if you buy one... With images, of course...

Thanks. It is sometimes hard for a newer non-paying member without the use of the search function. I was thinking I would get a response about it being discussed before. I'm all for supporting the forums I get on, but if I paid for the ones that I'm not really on alot, I wouldn't have the money to get my RAT Izula that is going to show up Friday would I:D Seriously, thanks for all the great info around here, everyone

You can also search within the site using either Google Site Search or if you have a little google-fu you can type what's within the quotes "ontario rat vs rat cutlery site:bladeforums.com" to get your answer from google.
