What's the FUTURE fer knives..or...who you gonna leave em to?

My few (but growing) group of knives will probably be like barter chits among my offsrping...

"OK, OK you can have the knives, but I get the Browning.."

I have my Grandpa's old trapper. He's long gone but whenever I see it or carry that knife it's like he's still with us.

This past March when my 14 year old cousin died it was a traumatic event for all of us. My brother managed to recover his CE Benchmade Ascent...

If you have knives like these that have some special family connection or other special history, take the time NOW to write that down so that that history won't be lost.

This is a subject I have thought about from time to time. Lots of us hide the real value of our collections from wives - so how will you know she'll be able to sell them for the amount they should be going for? Imagine someone handling your Terzoula and getting it for $50.00? Then again, if the wives knew the real value of our knives, our demise would be hastened. Quite a conundrum.

:D Somebody is going to get a heck of a deal upon my demise...

I have six nephews, three neices, nine second cousins and three other Godchildren so far, so there should be plenty of takers. Once we have our own kids, and grandkids, and grand neice/nephews, second cousins once removed (and is there such a thing as grand-godchildren?) there might not even be enough to go around. I can see about one hundred people carrying around "Uncle Jim's pocket knife" by the time I kick late this century.

I'm hopin' they'll go to our boy. He's already shown an interest and I just got a Microtech delivered to him earlier this week. I think he'll appreciate them.

Just before my father died in January 2003, he gave his Winchester 30-30 to my oldest son, and his "Western" brand hunting knife to my youngest son. It was the knife he bought and carried through WWII and Korea so it has a lot of sentimental value. I have given each of my two sons and my one son-in-law one of my Randall knives. I have another on order (this November) to give to my 18 year old daughter to give to her future husband (whoever he may be). My other few knives will be given to my grandsons -- however, not for a bunch of years yet!

I've seen some pretty ugly family disputes over property when the deceased refused to make sure an orderly plan was in place for it's distribution. "Things" may not have much posessive appeal to some, but it's best to make those bestowals while still alive so there is no misunderstanding.

At least one will be buried with me, but the rest are for my two Sons and the Grandchildren.

Hey Danbo, don't forget that Racer Roy is going to sell maps to your burial plot... some of us know which knife you will be buried with. :D

Lavan, maybe you could arrange with a damascus maker to mix the ashes with some powered steel and make a "Lavan mosaic pattern' blade. :D

Hey, I like that idea.... maybe I'll get cremated, mix my ashes with some powdered steel, have a 11"-13" "Mongo" bowie made!

I have two pieces that actually mean something. Both will go to my son. If I have more than two, well, I'm sure I'll have more knives that mean something in the 65-75 years left before I shuffle off this mortal coil. :D

My family is big on things like this. When my grandpa dies, his Masonic gear (Lodge 60-year pin, WM gear, and so on) goes to my father. Dad's known that for 30 years. When my father dies, it comes to me. When I die, it goes to my son, who will hopefully have joined Lodge by then. I have my great-great-grandfather's pocketknife, and my dad has my great-grandfather's Lodge sword. The search is still on for his ring and pocketwatch, though.

As you can tell, I've thought about this. ;)

Well I know for a fact that my two sons will inherit all my fishing tackle, rifles, watches, car models and knives.
One of my great regrets is that my mom was so upset when my father was killed she gave away most of his stuff......I only half a half dozen hand tied flies, a rifle, a shotgun, two knives and assorted equipment.....apparently he had a ton of fishing equipment, more rifles and shotguns and a bunch of knives and hunting equipment.....all from the late fifities/early sixties.
I sure wish my mother had kept all that good stuff for me!!
I won't make that mistake with my boys.

Kap

If I suddenly die I guess my father and a friend will get some and the rest will be sold in here.

If I get to be really old (like 50 or something :D ) I'd keep a handfull of favorites, sell the rest and spend it in my everyday way of living.

Now, watches and firearms are a completely different matter.... ;)

My son will get my beloved knives, assuming that he wants them. I was given my first knife by my father, and still have it to this day. When both of my grandfathers passed away, my grandmothers gave me the knife that they carried everyday. It seems fitting to me to pass them along to my son. He loves it when I open whatever knife I have with me at the time. By the way he is not even a year old yet! Boy does that drive my wife crazy.
