What's the general opinion on Queen?

An old man told me, several years ago, that in the early 1900's knives didn't come with an edge. He said it was so the buyer could sharpen it at whatever angle they preferred. I like Queen knives. I haven't ever had one that was sharp out of the box. But I am good at sharpening one, so it doesn't really bother me.

Since you always have to re-sharpen a knife after using it for a while, I don't mind 1 more time. :)
Besides, I sharpen them the way I want them anyway.

Got my Queen in the mail last week. And yes....it does need a good sharpening. However I love every other aspect of it and so far I've had to sharpen almost every other knife out of the box anyway. So i don't mind.

Also got a black lip RoughRider with it.

It's pretty and nice...but doesn't have the fit and finish that the queen one has.

I love em both...they'll be my pocketknives for the next week or so after I sharpen them.

Pictures and a possible review might come up after that.

It just seems intolerable that when most manufacturers DO send out their knives with a decent edge in the first place, Queen can't seem to be bothered.I do find this annoying. That said, my Teardrop Liner Lock in Amber Bone is one of my favourite knives, didn't find sharpening it up to be much fun, took a long long time on the Sharpmaker!

I bought a Mountain Man a couple of years ago in D2/Bonestag. Great looking knife and sharp but some of the worst bladeplay I have ever experienced.

I got another Queen about a six months back - a Serpentine slipjoint. The knife had the dull edges referred to all through this thread but once I put a decent edge on it it worked well for me. The D2 they use really holds an edge and I have experienced no corrosion issues carrying it in a pocket. Apart from the factory edge issue, the quality of the knife and workmanship is excellent. I really like this knife.

I got an S&M Horticulturist a few weeks back, it was plenty sharp out of the box, but the bladeplay is horrible. Any suggestions?

Return to the dealer or just send it to the factory - I have had great exsperiences with Queen's warranty repair service.

Thanks. I keep meaning to call the dealer, but I've been too busy. I'll call the dealer and see what they suggest.

Excellent point.

I started to add Queen knives (Folders and Premium Hunters) to my collection and users about five years ago and have been very happy what I have received from this company to date.

I also take pride in carrying knives not only made in the USA, but from my home state of PA. :)

What is a little sharpening anyway?:D

I only have one Queen knife. It came with a fairly oblique edge angle on each blade. It no longer has oblique edge angles and each blade cuts like a champion. I do not object to changing edge angles. I do that to almost every knife I buy. But Neeman is correct, diamond stones are almost a requirement.

- I LOVE the performance of the D2 steel. I much prefer it to that of any other traditional pocket knife in my price range.
- I find the fit and finish very good.
- The price is within what I can afford.

There are more Queen knives in my future. Soon.

Correction: NOW.

A nice little mini trapper. It took a while to put the edge on it that I wanted. Very much worth the effort.

Thanks, Peter.

Like all trappers, she fits my hand just right, though at 3 1/2" closed, I think I would wish for anther 1/4" longer. I am extremely happy with the tight tolerances and overall fit and finish. I lack the photographic skills to display just how nicely made this knife is. When I look at the butt of the knife, the bands of golden brass and steel look like a single piece of metal that has stripes in it. It looks cool.

I love that model!
I've been wanting a Queen carbon steel Mountain man for 3 years but unfortunately i've heard too many complaints about blade play.
And the only way i can get one is online, so i can't really handpick one.
Anybody know a good brick and mortar knife shop thats stocks Queen?
Maybe i'll build vacations plans around it, lol!

Give Cumberland Knife Works a try- www.cumberlandknifeworks.com- and tell Bill you'd like him to look it over. I've always had exceptionally good luck there. Site's slow as molasses, but he has about anything you'd want.
